Yes or No????

Before you even ask, "why the hell are you putting coffee grounds down the drain when you can throw them out"...  Simple, I have a reusable coffee filter for both the drip and my Kuerig.  I try to dump most of them in the trash (grounds) but have to rinse a fair amount down the drain when cleaning the filter.

This shouldn't be a problem, right?  I mean, I have a garbage disposal that pretty much grinds things up to coffee ground size particles anyway...

I'm 99% sure it's ok, but think of when my mom and dad had to pull out tons of pipe because they were all clogged.  Granted, they were pouring grease down the drain (this was 30 years ago?) and reduced the pipe opening from about 2" diameter to about 1/2" diameter...

Several times a year, I also use the grounds as fertalizer for the plants.  I heard it's good for them.

If you have the option, save them for compost - best use for coffee grounds ever. If you have to throw them away, and toss most and rince some down the drawn that should be fine, especially with a good garbage disposal system. Just remember to run lots of cold water when rinsing them down.

I'll be honest, I shove everything down the disposal.  Grape vines, egg shells, orange rines when I peel them, the peels of bake potatos, apple cores.  Oh and I once shove a half eaten corn on the cob down there because I was curious.  And no it did not grind it up.

So you can guess that I say no problem to coffee grinds.

Opinion based on a lot of ignorance and too much imagination: I picture the grounds cementing together in the "S" of the drain pipe. I'm betting if you poured them into the drain slowly with water running, that wouldn't happen, but I'm not sure. If you have plants, I say use the grounds as mulch/food.

Since I use a small press, I throw my grounds from the carafe onto a tree outside the door. A metal coffee can would be a good place to keep the old grounds for a day or two until you get the chance to throw them on a plant, but don't let them sit too long or they'll get green and furry.

1). If you do, a little at a time with plenty of water.

2). Wasting of water would be the concern here if you conserve it, or are paying for water usage (being out in the "country" I have a well, so this doesn't affect me, but the coffee grounds would affect my septic).

My grandmother did it for years and years with no issues.  I also use to dump what would shake out in the garbage and then rinse out the thing before putting it back in the maker and never had an issue.  But yeah, I hear it is awesome for a compost.

it is actually good garbage disposal - the grit scrubs it.

All of mine (and my place of work's) goes into my garden.

I read, or maybe my wife told me (probably the latter) that potato peels are bad for the disposal - something about the starch content.... I don't know.

I knock what will come out of the reuable filter into the trash and rinse the rest down the drain.  No probs so far.

This reminds me of just recently, a friend used his 3 year old Dyson vacuum to suck up wet coffee grounds and completely ruined the vacuum.

He did take the vacuum back to Bed, Bath & Beyond explaining the situation, they exchanged it 3 years after the initial purchase. On top of that, they refunded $179 dollars because of the price difference three years later. To this day he still feels bad, though he didn't do anything out of the guidelines. lol

I compost all my grounds; from the press, drip or epsresso machine. Any little bit that is left I rinse down the drain but very little goes down the drain so I don't worry about it.

Dad's been doing it for about 40 years in his house. Friend of mine worked in a retirement home and that was the SOP there for as long as she worked there.

Yeah, if you have pigs and slop them that's where they go, compost would work well as well. If you have neither of those then down the drain they go.

I have always "heard" coffee grinds are good for the disposal but I began to refrain from everything else when I realized the amount of water needed to "dispose" properly.

No, I throw em in my yard in various beds - awesome for plants, i.e. compost.

Down the garbage disposal with a bit of water.  Every AM for 11 years.  Not a single issue.

Never let your wife clean up after dinner and grind 1/2 a pound of leftover pasta with not enough water. Never find this obstruction by cutting open the drain pipe on the floor below just ahead of said obstruction. And never be directly under said cut when making said ill-advised cut.

The result is that you look like that poster of the baby with the bowl dumped over his head, much swearing, cold and wet with pasta and soapy water and tons of clean-up. And the need to replace the ceiling in the bathroom on the floor below the kitchen.

I throw mine (filter and all) into the disposal.

I DON'T throw eggshells into the disposal anymore--they have caused numerous clogs.

i use a reusable filter and dump the majority of the grinds on plants, then rinse the rest down with water.  coffee grinds absorb some of the funky smells in the drain.  LOVE IT.
