Pre-race routine:

got up 3 hrs prior to race start...good plan. ate 2 ww eng muffins w/low sugar jelly, 24 oz. accelerade.

arrived, checked in (packet p/u, goodie bag, body marking), hit the head, transition set up, body glide, suited up. goggles are fogging up for some reason. need to figure that one out.
Event warmup:

1 min swim, 1 min run.
Swim
  • 39m 16s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

lots of jellyfish in the water even though they said there were hardly out there. i felt very comfortable in the swim, got into a rhythm in parts, broken up by sighting and running into people.
What would you do differently?:

learn how to swim in a group better. train to go a little harder (in shorter races). i really take it ez on the swim, which i like, i just don't like finishing so slow! practice sighting. more OW swims. need to find a lake i can swim in around here.
Transition 1
  • 01m
Comments:

my rack was right by the exit. i highly recommend it! could have saved some time by putting shoes on bike, but would only save a few seconds. wetsuit got stuck on my right leg again, and that darn timing chip. maybe pam on the outside of the suit?
What would you do differently?:

maybe consider putting shoes on bike already. put glasses and helmet on at same time as suit rremoval? would need to practice that.
Bike
  • 1h 10m 23s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 21.18 mile/hr
Comments:

i went out pretty hard bc i thought my friend was in front of me and i HAD to beat him. ended up when i passed him i lapped him! i thought he was out of the water ahead of me, but he wasn't. it was his first oly and he did this one early in his training, so i had to smoke him...especially on the bike since he was riding my old one!

flat courses are a LOT harder than i thought. you have to stay in the aero position and crank the whole time. it's hard on the back and the taint.
What would you do differently?:

not much.
Transition 2
  • 00m 45s
Comments:

was a little slow here. stretched hamstrings a bit in t2.
What would you do differently?:

consider putting my race belt on before swim and rolling up the race number until the run.
Run
  • 51m 55s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

HOT! i loved the flat run course...my first since i train on hilly courses. it was a great chance. i went out very slow the first leg as my legs were pretty stiff and tired. i then got into some kind of slow groove for the next two legs and then kicked it up for the last leg, especially the last mile. i thought the end was 600-700 yds closer than it was! so i was sprinting for a long time! beat the guy who passed me in the last mile though. kept HR around 170 for most of the run. seemed to be a good place for my HR vs. effort.

What would you do differently?:

run faster? hard to say. i liked stopping at the aid stations and walking for 10 seconds or so while i cooled down and drank.
Post race
Warm down:

walked around and stretched a little

What limited your ability to perform faster:

the heat

Event comments:

i think bc of the heat they should have had more drink stations on the run, but it was a good course and plenty of volunteers and they were very helpful. it was the hardest race i've done to date, but the most fun. i felt very comfortable at the start and with my effort. as i do more races, i hope the comfort level stays the same or gets better.
