Pre-race routine:

Picked up Autumn and headed to the race. After a slight detour :) we made it there and walked down to the lake, picked up our caps, got body marked, and just milled about.
Event warmup:

Some very light stretching, and then we got into the water to swim around a bit. Autumn is a brave lass, but I was not loving all the weeds. Yuck.

Comments:

Decent race! I had never swam one mile in open water before, so I was a little nervous, but it was fine! This is a pretty average race pace for me, although this time it was without a wetsuit, so that is good. The biggest problem I had was sighting between the first and second buoys. We were swimming directly into the sun for that stretch, and I could not see the buoy at all. About three times I ended up stopping to tread water and had to lift my goggles and squint to find it. Ugh. Lost some time there, definitely. I was following other swimmers and the trails of bubbles in the water, but I wasn't confident that anyone else could see the buoy any better than I could, so I wanted to find it myself.

In the last 200 yards or so, I decided to try to catch the three people closest in front of me, so I turned it on full speed at the end. I passed all three. Woo hoo!

Autumn did the 2 mile swim, so she had to do another lap after I got out. She did a great job! Next year I'll give the 2 miler a try.
What would you do differently?:

Not a lot. Practice sighting in the sun, I suppose.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked and stretched a bit. Watched the 2 milers come in, cheered for Autumn. (Note: the guy who won the 2 mile swam it in 40:07! For 2 miles! Unbelievable.)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The sun

Event comments:

Good race and one that I'll do again. Thanks to Autumn for suggesting it!

Great swim! Good luck with the 2 miler next year. I find the 2 milers to be more fun since you have some time to actually get into a rythmn before the swim is over. Good job getting those last three people in the end.
