Hervey Bay, Queensland
Australia

Sunny
Total Time = 2h 51m 44s
Overall Rank = 177/244
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 24/33
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:50am and had a piece of toast with Nutella spread and a coffee.
Drank large glass of water.
Event warmup:

Bumped into someone I know from work and got talking so didn't get to do any warm up...
Swim
  • 31m 11s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 05s / 100 meters
Comments:

The weather was beautiful for the swim, no wind and flat calm conditions. It was declared a wetsuit swim for age-grouper's but not for pro's; didn't make much difference for me because I don't have a wetsuit!
What would you do differently?:

Have a swim warm-up and think about getting a wetsuit
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

I snagged my tri-shorts on the rear of the saddle nearly causing a disaster but managed to recover and get my feet into the shoes ok
What would you do differently?:

Pull my tri-shorts up a bit after the swim!
Bike
  • 1h 28m 5s
  • 40 kms
  • 27.25 km/hr
Comments:

I got off to a good start with speeds around 36 km/hr but after the area around Point Vernon seemed harder with a rough road surface, headwind and short steep hill and I slowed quite a bit on the second lap.
My drink bottle fell off as I went over a speed hump so I didn't get to drink at all on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Secure my drink bottle better, I also need more cycling endurance
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

I slipped my feet out and got on top of my shoes well but as I got ready to dismount on shoes jammed into the road and I had to jump off pretty quickly!
What would you do differently?:

Not sure what happened with the show jamming so I'll need to ask for some advice; running off the bike was good.
Run
  • 52m 27s
  • 10 kms
  • 05m 14s  min/km
Comments:

The run went really well, I wanted to finish strongly but also wanted to enjoy my first Olympic distance tri so I had set a target of under 55mins but knew after the first km that I could finish quicker than that quite comfortably.
My final km was done in 4:35 which was my quickest and I felt really strong as I crossed the line
What would you do differently?:

Nothing much apart from pushing myself harder next time
Post race
Warm down:

Ate some oranges and apples, wandered around and has a big cup of coffee and then a smoothie; did a few stretches later.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I normally do a swim warm-up and didn't this time; my cycling is still my weakest sport but I've only been cycling for 7 months so I just need to keep training and increase my endurance. My running is going well and I can afford to push the pace more next time

Event comments:

This was my first Olympic distance race so I can't compare it to anything but the volunteers were great, the course was fun and I had a good time.
I was surprised to see some big names turn up for such a small event, Courtney Atkinson won the event with a time of 1:52

Nice race mate - great start for your first Oly.   After looking at your logs I realized I am not the only person on BT that rides a Bianchi Via Nirone.
