So my old car had a touch keypad on the door, so I could leave my keys in the car and unlock the door with the touch pad after a race.  My new car doesn't have this feature.

So when doing a running race (note no transition area), what do you do with your car keys?  I've got a 1/2 marathon this weekend, and just realized I don't know what I am going to do.  My wife won't be there to support me on this one, so I don't have anyone to hold my keys.

You really only need one key: the one that gets you into the car.  I tie mine to the inside of my shorts or tights.  Has never caused me a problem.  You could also tie it in with your shoe laces and then double knot them.  Just make sure to tie the key to the outside (lateral) part of the shoe.  I've nicked my other ankle tying it to the inside; which is why the key is now in my shorts.

All of my Nike running shorts have small key pockets.

There's also lots of clip-on velcro pocket thingies available.  Most running and sporting goods stores probably have something that would work for you.

Many running shorts have a key pocket (often as part of the lining) and tri shorts have a pocket ... can you wear a tri top to run in? that will have a pocket.

Can you thread a shoelace through the key? tuck it in so it doesn't bounce on your shoe.

I manufacture athletic/waterproof easy-to-wear-not-nearly-as-sucky-as-waterbottlebelts "stuffholders" ... wish I could ship you one!

I took my key off the ring with my fob and slid it behind my cell phone in my armband.

If you don't run with an armband this isn't going to help much though.

are you carrying gels for your HM?

maybe the same method would work for your key.

Have a look at a surfshop, if you are close to the coast, I have seen some pretty nifty "locks" that clamps onto your car and uses a keypad to open.

something like this

Friend of mine has something similar and its great for openwater swims, needless to say, we all watch him like hawks as everybody's keys is in his car.

Now for some reason, as a guy, the fact that you knicked your ankle with the key doesn't make me want to put it down my shorts.

I did a 5K a few years ago and within first 1/2 mile I saw a single car key on the ground. I didn't stop to pick it up but did go back after the race for it.

If you tuck your key into something, make sure it is secure.

When I race and carry my key, I often will use a safety pin to keep it in place.

My car has the switchblade style key fob thing which is huge, but it has a valet key that's basically just a key. So for a race, I use the valet key and safety pin it to my shorts in a spot where the swinging and jingling won't drive me nuts.

I have one of these w/ toggles. I use it as a race number belt also. Perfect place for keys, a gel, and electrolyte pills for longer runs/races.

On long training runs, I have an amphipod belt (with the water bottles) that also has a larger pouch and I'll carry a cellphone and keys there.

This.  Great for running, doesn't help for OWS practice.

In that case, I leave my key in the wheel well of the car.  Not secure, but my car is crap so I'm not real worried about it being stolen.  That'll change next month when our new car arrives, so I'll have to come up with something else...

If I don't have a pocket and I am just running (no bike) I tie it into my shoe laces and then tuck it under a lace to avoid bounce.  I do this for training a lot. I am not comfortable leaving it behind.

For a swim, I leave the key in a small bag of stuff on the beach.  Maybe it's just my beach, but I don't trust the key in a place that's easily accessed by the 15 people who saw me put the key there.  At least if it's in the bag, it's kind of obvious is someone's rifling through it.

For what your talking about. I'd put it with my dry shirt and flip flops and use the bag drop.

Othewise, it goes in my small fanny pack along with my cel phone.

Touch pad on my truck so no worries about the key when I drive that.

This weekend we'll be doing a run out of town and we'll drive the minivan so I expect I'll have a key tied to the drawstring in the shorts or my wife will carry it in the small key pocket in her shorts.

I've actually carried my key under compression shorts along my thigh durring a run.

I take the car key off of the key ring then put it under my license plate.  The plate has two bolts in the top and none in the bottom, so I just pull out the bottom of the plate and it holds the key in place but your can't really tell anything is under it.
