I just completed my first race of the season and came in 2nd out of 13 in my AG (M45-49).  Reading the rule (see below), it sounds like I did not qualify.  But the Note they added is a little confusing.  I am guessing its not meant just if there are 25 people in an AG, but trying to illustrate that there is some rounding that takes place.  For example, if there are 1-10 people then 1 person qualifies,  if there are 10-20 people, 2 people qualify and so on...  Or I am not reading this correctly?

This is what the rules says:

  • A non-championship USAT sanctioned event in one of the specified qualifying distances (as explained above) will qualify the top 10 percent or top finisher (whichever is greater) in each age group.

    ** Note: If there are 25 athletes in an age group and an athlete places 3rd or higher, they have qualified for the 2011 Age Group Nationals. If an athlete places 4th out of 25 they have not qualified.

I believe that is correct. I believe you have to place within the top 10% of the AG to qualify. I could ask around though.  If you'd like.  If there was 20 people in your AG you would have qualified.

10% is correct from what I understand.  I also *think* that if someone in your AG won Masters or an Overall slot and is racing as an age grouper, you have to roll them into your AG standings.  I am not sure about the later though.

So what is the meaning of the note then?  3rd out of 25 is not top 10%.  Where is the line?

My understanding is that the will round up at 5.  The easiest thing to do is just email them.  The usually respond quickly and will clarify.

15 people would have gotten you in (10% would be 1.5 people. Round up=2 people qualify).

I'm assuming that they are saying if it is a .5% point that they will round up, but I would email. USAT is very responsive. 

I just wanted to make sure you checked the Master's winner and the OA  as that may bump you to 3rd.  That happened to me a couple of times before I finally had a great race that qualified me.

I just noticed that I actually finished 2nd out of 16 and not 13.  Not sure how I missed that before.  Sounds like that might push me into the qualifying column.

I would ask them (or check the site) for their rounding policy, mind you... I am just making a guess. It could be that they round any whole number down. But good luck to you!

Round up rule applied to me last year.  I was 2nd out of 19 and I was in.  I'm pretty sure the 0.5 rule applies.  I emailed USAT just to make sure, they got back to me within a day or two.

Thought I would provide an update.  I emailed USAT and this is the answer I got back.  I am very excited that I qualified.

Hi Mike,

USA Triathlon does indeed round up and give athletes the benefit with our qualification percentages.  3/25 is actually 12%.  However, since 2/25 is only 8%, we allow the next placing athlete (3rd place out of 25) to qualify as well.

In your case, finishing 2nd out of 16 does qualify you for the Age Group National Championship.  Congratulations!  We hope that you will decide to register for the event and join us in Burlington in August!  Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

I think I qualified at a sprint last month, 3/39. Now I can go to Vermont and get bested by the best. Anyone familiar with the course? A quick Google maps view seems relatively flat for that part of the country.

I have not ridden or run the course, but knowing that area the only significant climb will be the stretch that runs east along 189 for the bike course.  Mostly rolling hills down by the waterfront though.

So if I take first AG in a small, local USAT tri does that qualify me for AG nats? None of the OA finishers was in my AG.

Yes - I believe so as long as its a USAT sponsored event.
