Subject: Garmin Firmware Update

I updated the firmware on my 310XT yesterday and it deleted everything from the device (data fields, history, etc.).  I have updated before, but this was the first time it wiped the device.  Since I am generally leary of software updates, I luckily downloaded everything to Garmin Connect before installing the update.  The watch works fine and I only spend 15 minutes re-programing my data fields.

Has anyone else experienced a "reset" after updating?

ME!!!!!!  It happened to me about 3 weeks ago, just 7 days before a race.  But for me it completely deleted ALL software from the device...  ALL!  I was emailing and speaking with Garmin and they all told me there was no way to reset it once I had the error message "Software Missing" displayed on the watch.  Apparently it is happening alot lately.  I had to ship back my Garmin.  It was covered under warranty and they will ship you a refurbished one.  The one they sent me looks brand new.  They would have shipped it free to me, but I wanted to guarantee that I would have it by my race so I paid $18 for 2 day shipping.

Wow!  I guess I shouldn't be complaining about 15 minutes of re-programming.  My wife has a 310XT for which I have not downloaded the recent update.  I might wait on that.

Same here. Lucky for me I saw the little blurb about loosing all data and setting. So...before I clicked "install" I made sure everything was on Garmin Connect. Still I had to re-set the data fields.

At it's worst, it still doesn't come close to the troubles I have when I update my BB

if you are not using power and you are happy with your current firmware forget it.  its for power users mainly.  3.2 is a functioning great update.

Having a recovery plan before performing an update is SOP on my end. Saves a lot of heartache, plus it provides a good excuse for putting off other things until some other time.

Many of their updates will erase all your user data.  Definitely recommend not being a hurry when you do one.   They don't always, but often will.  Same thing happens if you ever have to do a hard reset.

The same thing happened to my FR60 when I updated it a few weeks ago.  I always make sure I download whatever training data is on the device before I update.  It would be nice if there was a backup feature where you could backup all of the data from the device and restore it after the update.

One problem there is with updates where new fields are added is that old data won't play nice with the new layout. Blank fields, incorrect counters/indexes and the like can cause all kinds of errors. Our friends at Garmin would also have to write a conversion program to correctly format the data before it's restored. Too much potential for bugs. Better to reload the workouts via Training Center and do without the history.

I must be the only OCD person here....I download my data 5 seconds after my workout into like 5 different programs...lol.

I also regularly delete the activities off the device so they download faster.

I never do firmware updates because my 500 had problems communicating with my Quarq and customer service blamed it on the software...so I only use the version that they gave me to update it to.

I'm with you on this.  I load my data into GTC, BT, and SportTracks as soon as I finish my workout.  I also regularly delete activities off the watch, to speed download time (and reduce the chance of it hanging mid-download).

Last 2 updates have wiped device. They warn you which ones wipe and which ones do not:

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/store/fr310update.jsp?null&ra=true

This update is awesome for power cause it finally includes 3 and 15 sec avg and allows you to choose to include 0s or not.

Can also turn off smart recording and get once per second (like the 305).

Me too! Can't get the data uploaded quick enough.

BTW I had no trouble with the Firware update. I did need to reset the data fields, but that was like I had a new device! :-)

My biggest challenge will be during an eight day ride I am doing in September. I won't have access to my Mac to upload my ride data each day. That, more than anything else, is causing me stress. A three hour flight to the start; 600 miles of riding, across two states in 8 days; and I am only concerned about uploading Garmin data..... okay, I need to see someone....
