Is the transition area really totally closed off after 7:00?

I can't seem to find the answer to that question. Does anyone know?

On this link:

http://www.maplegrovetriathlon.com/page/show/240729-event-schedule-

You see the following:

7:00 AM
Transition Area Closes

The Maple Grove Triathlon asks all triathletes to adhere to our closed transition policy to ensure a smooth event and prompt race start. A soft close of the transition area will begin at 6:45 AM. The transition area will be monitored closely by volunteers, but will not be responsible for lost or stolen items.

That means that if I don't start until 8:24 I have to hang around for 1.5 hours until I race.

They're officially checking it on race day but I think water is high 70's.
I wouldn't doubt they would do everything for racers to wear wetsuits.

grbac6800 - 2011-08-23 3:33 PM Any idea on water temp?

I asked this question on Facebook on 8/17 and they said:

The 2010 race was wet suit legal. The lake is deep in the middle which typically keeps it fairly cool. We'll have a reading Friday/Saturday of next week. Happy training!

I thought it was kind of funny saying they would check it on Saturday. Well, yeah, I figured that!  Would be nice to know on Friday, though.   Even if it's above 78, if the offer the chance to wear it but go unranked I am still going to wear it. Hopefully it will be at least that cool.

BikerGrrrl - 2011-08-23 9:45 AM I am not excited to be starting right before the men 35-44.  I guess I will be getting swam over...  Lovely.

ETA: 46 in my wave, so that's good.

So, what exactly is the problem with being crawled over by a bunch of young men? Kiss  I haven't found start times/waves for the 111.  Ideas?

It is a mass start for the 111 race. Should be interesting with a 2 turn .6 mile swim.

I haven't seen how many people signed up for the 111, though they only have the elites and then everyone else in two waves. This year, the bike would be just too much (given this is my first year of doing tris), but I'm hoping to get up to HIM next summer (with Liberty and Square Lake in mind, maybe Chisago), and the 111 would be great to do!

Good luck to all who are doing that distance.

As far as a BT get-together on race morning, the big red spider web-like climbing structure in the park stands out, but I'm not sure what areas they'll have roped off to keep racer and spectators separated pre-race. Another area would be on the trail for the run as it goes up the hill heading out of transition on the south side of the park (Dunkirk is east, the lake is west, Weaver Lake Dr. is north), I would defer to others to pick a good time (either before or after the pre-race meeting at 7?)

Anyway, I'm ready to go. hope all is well!

RE water temps,

i found a link to the citizen lake monitoring program through the DNRs lake finder. This shows the water temps for every year from 1997-2009. In only two years was the last temp measured prior to 8/27 over 78. In 2003, it was 81.7 3-4 days before the 27th, and in 2001, it was 89 degrees (!!??!), but that was on 8/7. The next reading on 9/11 was around 69.7.

ETA: link: http://www.pca.state.mn.us/index.php/water/water-types-and-programs/surface-water/lakes/citizen-lake-monitoring-program/clmp-lake-data-search.html

I've been tempted to just go buy a pool thermometer and head to the park, but I'm too lazy to do it...

With only around 100 entries for the whole race, it shouldn't be too bad.

Went to Weaver Lake for a swim tonight. Strong north wind and very choppy condition. Temp is cooler than Nokomis for LTF Mpls Tri. I think wetsuit will be allowed. I would say expect to have choppy water Saturday AM.

Weather.com is predicting a cool night (upper 50s) Friday after a chance of afternoon thunderstorms, with mostly sunny skies and winds 5-7 from the north on saturday. i'm guessing that means Canadian high pressure and calm winds in the morning. But i'm no meterologist...

6:45 at the rope play thing sounds like a plan.

I just read through the "Things you need to know". It says you cannot fix a flat tire while on the bike. Does that pretty much mean that if you get a flat you have to either ride with the flat or run\walk the bike back?

Is this common or only with USAT events?

I think the line your talking of is below:

"All athletes are solely responsible for the actual repair and maintenance of their bicycles and equipment. Repairs are allowed to bicycles during the course of the race, however, athletes are not allowed to change wheels or bicycles during the race."

My interpretation of this would be that you can't have a SAG wagon carrying a new wheel or another bike, but you can change a flat on your own if you carry a tube or kit on your bike.

RE the picture, 6:45 at the giant red climbing thingy is perfect. For Rowdypaint, you can see it right in the middle of the banner picture on the race information page, in the middle of that big circle in the grass

Gotcha. I think I was reading it to late last night. Changing wheels makes sense, for some reason I took that as changing flats and that you would have to walk your flat back.

Thanks for the clarification. (and here I thought I could lighten the load on the bike by dumping the tubes and stuff...)

Re: a picture.  Is anyone bringing a non-racer along that can take it?  It would be too late for any of us to bring a camera and put it back in transition.  I would love to have a picture, so hopefully someone can help us out!

Oh man, could you imagine!  What if you were 12.5 miles away when it happened?  I think I'd give up and hitch a ride    I am happy to haul along the tire changing stuff; I like to think it's good karma and I'll never flat during a race.

I actually got a slow leak at the end of the my half iron ride. I was SO GLAD I had my CO2 and inflator along.  I opted to just refill the air at two points and managed to get it in without having to stop to change it.  Phew.

Or, if someone is clever enough to get a T spot near the edge they could just toss their camera back into their bag.  That wouldn't be stressful at all...

I am planning to be there Saturday morning just to watch and take some pictures of the event (sadly I am not participating this year).  I would be happy to stop by at 6:45 and take a picture of the group.  It would be great to meet some fellow MN BT'ers as well and put some faces to these screen names.

I'll try and stop by the rope spidery thingy at 6:45 and say hi quick to all of you. I go off first just after 7 so that might be cutting it close. Otherwise I will see everyone on the run course...look for the guy in a geargrinder jersey with bright lime green shades on!

The first race starts at 7:30 with the TriStar pros and then 7:33 for the rest of you guys.  Should be plenty of time, assuming no one is cutting it close to be finished up in transition.  The race meeting is at 7.

Just realized I haven't been on here much lately.  I was planning on the sprint for this one, but did something to my hip during Ragnar this past weekeend.  Tried to do an easy 3 miles last night and the pain was too much.  So, I'm out of the race - just dont' want to make it worse and not be able to do TC full in October.   BUT, I will be there cheering you all on and I have to be there early since I'm working the LUNA Chix booth - so I can bring over one of the LUNA Chix to take a photo with all BT'ers.  See y'all at the spider thingy

Also, if last year was any indication, you CAN get back into the transition area after 7 if it is to do something quick (like drop off a camera). They want the transition area "basically" closed after 7. But (again based on last year) if you go to one of the gates and talk to one of the people there, they will let you in to quickly drop something off or pick something up.
