Subject: Sunburn blister help
I've googled this issue but all I can find are sites that say "Don't ever pop sunburn blisters!" and unfortunately, that is not an option as explained below.

I got a pretty nasty sunburn on both shoulders last weekend, and it has been extremely painful all week. I have been putting aloe vera on it twice a day, and the pain has been subsiding a bit each day.

This afternoon, for the first time, a ton of very small blisters appeared on both shoulders. These pop instantly if they are even lightly touched (they basically just rub off, like a normal sunburn peeling).

Do I need to continue putting aloe or some type of medication on these, or should I just leave them alone?

I just don't want to see an infection as the result of this, and it is the first time I've ever had a sunburn that actually blistered.

i spent every summer all summer when i was growing up with peely shoulders. i don't think my parents ever did anything, and i continued to run around playing in dirt and whatnot. Not that i'd recommend that, but i think just keeping the area clean and moisturized is the way to go.

I not a dermatologist or anything, but I can tell you what I'd do.  I would keep an eye on them and treat it like an open wound (antibacterial spray or cream, bandage).

When I have an open wound, which seems to happen a lot since I started triathlon, I always do an antibac spray, layer of aquaphor and cover it up with a clean bandage until new skin starts to grow.

You could use something like Burn Stuff.  It should work well for keeping it infection free and should relieve some of the pain. Check with your pharmacist if you want more info.

Sounds like you have trapped sweat under the pealing skin (sounds gross) that has caused the blisters?   This may be somewhat different than actual burn blisters.  I have this ocassionally and it looks pretty bad, but goes away quickly.

what sort of skin is under these "popped blisters" does it look like normal skin would after a sun burn peels off or does it look more like an interdermal layer (not sure if that is the correct anatomic term but the usually shinny/gross underlayer of skin you would see if you rubbed off a scab) if it looks more like regular skin I would say keep moisterising it and not worry. If it looks more gross like under there I would take some more care, add in an antibiotic and a moisterizer and keep it covered during the day if possible but open at night to breath.

That is what I would do anyway.

Cardenas,

I never thought of that, but you may be exactly right....the first time the "blisters" showed up was immediately after a workout today in 100 degree heat, when I was sweating quite a bit.

As far as the skin underneath, it looks normal.
