Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5am and had a slice of raisin toast with chocolate spread - all the kids had left me. Quick coffee and bathroom stop then drank large glass of water.
Event warmup:

Arrived 5 minutes before the start so just jogged around for a few minutes then found the 1:50 pacer.

Comments:

I felt really good at the start of this race and was chatting happily with other runners even at my chosen pace; Last week I stepped in a hole whilst away in the bush and hyperextended my left knee and it has been sore since but seemed to be settling.
At 6km I felt a dull ache starting in the outer front of my left knee and by 10km I thought I'd have to quit.
I walked for a minute then just told myself that I'm not going to quit and pushed hard to the end despite quite bad pain. At one point I was panting hard and realised it wasn't due to the pace it was the pain.
Anyway, I reasoned that the quicker I ran the sooner I could finish and stop the pain so I just kept pushing and pushing.
I made myself smile at all the volunteers and count to 100 in my head to take my mind off it.
What would you do differently?:

Not step in a hole!
Really I was quite pleased with managing to get through this race, I very nearly quit at 11k
Post race
Warm down:

I met up with Allison and the kids at the start/finish and had to deal with a sulky 13 year old who was crying and refusing to put her shoes on...
They were all doing the 3k fun run/walk after my race; In the end I persuaded her to walk the course as long as I walked it with her so that gave me a warm-down, my knee was throbbing by then.
The others all had a great time which was nice to see!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Knee pain

Event comments:

This is a great event and a beautiful venue. Everyone got cool running caps and lots of fresh fruit afterwards: watermelon, oranges and apples.

Ouch.  I don't think I could have kept running through the pain you described.     Hope you're kicking back and giving that knee a good rest.  Actually, it's probably not the knee itself, but one of your quad muscles yanking on the attach point at the knee.
