My life revolves around my training. Most weeks I feel like I do nothing else apart from train, go to work and sleep.

However, if I take 2 or more days off training after a big race or if I'm feeling run down or sick, I feel like my life has no direction or purpose.

Does anyone else feel like this?

No.  For me it's a hobby that takes a lot of time and $, but it's not all-consuming.  I still spend time with my wife and son, and we have friends that we socialize with.  I know I don't race to my full potential that way, but I'm ok with it, because I prefer to keep things in balance.

Dude, drive to mini-mart.  Buy some beer.  Order a pizza.  Hopefully you've got some of the Tour on DVR.  Relax and enjoy.

I'm with you on this one. Anyone think it's possible to become addicted to exercise induced endorphins?

I spend a great deal of time training and thinking about Triathlon but it's good to keep things in balance.  If you only do triathlon stuff it would be hard to keep it up for very long.

I feel the same way.  Something always feels off if I don't have something scheduled for the day.

Just feels like everyday I have to fit in triathlon somewhere.

Can't hang out at friends for the occasional late night as I have training in the morning, can't spend too much time doing other fun things after work or in the weekends, have training, can't go hiking or skiing as I have a run this afternoon, etc.

Same here.

But I'm probably the most boring person I know.  Parents think it's an unhealthy/unsustainable mentality and they are absolutely right.  I just enjoy the peace that comes from disciplined training.

Nope, not me. Triathlon, and the inclusive training, is nothing more than a hobby to me. It ranks right up there with fly fishing, backpacking, off-roading and any number of enjoyable things I fill my time with. The health benefits are definitely a plus, and that is more the reason I do tri's anyway.

My life revolves around my family. The healthier I am the longer I will be around to enjoy my wife, kids, parents, brothers, in-laws, nephews, nieces, friends etc...

In no way am I saying the way you feel is bad, sad, unhealthy or wrong. In fact, when I was involved in skydiving I felt the same way you feel towards triathlon. It was all I ever wanted to do, the only thing I could ever see myself doing and nothing else mattered. Things change. I haven't jumped in over four years and I don't miss it one bit. Well, every now and then when I see old pics or videos of me and my friends in freefall I miss it a little. Wink

I think most of us are a touch OCD or else why would we be doing this.  Training for tris just happens to a fill a void that I'd have regardless of this lifestyle.  Before training there was always a good part of me that was uneasy and uncomfortable just sitting around doing, well doing nothing.  Just kicking back and relaxing isn't something that comes easy or naturally for me as I feel I always need to be "on the go".  Basically if I'm sitting I'm missing out on something, or at least that's how it feels.  When I was in my teens and early 20s that void was filled with golf and I'd play 7 days a week, anywhere from 18-36 holes a day.  If I wasn't playing I was at the range hitting balls and on the practice green working on my putting stroke.  Before that it was consuming myself with organized sports through school and summer leagues; soccer and hockey mainly.  Well that's me anyway, not sure if it hits home with anyone else.

X2   I think the personality type of the majority of triathletes fits this.  The key is to find some sort of balance.  If you spend years being fit and fast but neglect all of your relationships, it will be a tough time later in life when all of your friends have moved on and stop inviting you out.  Will it really matter if you miss a workout here and there?  Not for most of us.  A missed workout is not going to ruin your next race.

Good luck.

Exactly and for me, that's what weekends are for.  I won't intentionally ditch a workout to make something happen but I won't skip out on a fun time with friends/family just because I can't miss training or make it up later in the day.  During the week though I'm off limits

What's the old saying:  If you're in a healthy relationship, you could be training harder.

I'm a college prof, so I have tremendous flexibility.  Thus I can train usually when my girl is working.

I feel this way when I'm in the part of my training schedule that has 2/day workouts, but I'm not doing that year round.  I make a point of doing more casual socializing and catching up with friends during the scheduled breaks in my training.    No family lives close to me so I travel to see them and I don't adhere to a strict training schedule when I travel.  I'm there to see them and I'm on their time.

I first decided to train for a triathlon a couple years ago when the economy caused a noticeable slowdown at work.  Suddenly I wasn't spending all hours in the office and I felt like I was sitting around wasting time.  Decided to train for a 1/2 IM and two years later, I can't imagine giving up the training and everything that comes with it.  The biggest potential problem is that work has picked up again and I am not as interested in dedicating so many hours to my job.  I'd rather be swimming or biking or running.   Somehow I've switched from immersion in an activity that puts money in my account to immersion in an activity that drains money from my account.

My friends basically work nights and I work days (during the week) so other than work I've not got a ton of other demands (just take a look at my house! It's a wreck)

I get up early and get my workouts in on the weekends so I've still got time to hang out with the people I want to see.

Burned out on dating at the moment so that helps I suppose.

However, I love the way things are going... and until I don't, I see nothing wrong with it.

Yes. Definitely. I used to be bipolar; now I'm tripolar.
