Subject: Pre-Race Report from IMWI

Hey folks back home. Ironman is truly amazing.

They had this thing (which I guess they do at every Ironman pasta dinner) where they ask everyone who has done 1 Ironman please stand up because there are over 400 IronVirgins at IMWI this year.  We all clapped and stuff.  Then they said.

OK.  Those with more than 5 stay standing.  (few folks sat down)

OK.  Those with more than 10 stay standing. (more folks sat down)

OK.  Those with more than 15 stay standing.  (about 30 folks still remained standing)

OK.  Those with more than 20 stay standing.  (about 20 folks still remained)

OK.  Those with more than 25 stay standing.  (about 11 folks or so remained)

OK.  Those with more than 30 stay standing.  (3 folks or so remained)

OK.  Those with more than 35 say standing.  (1 guy left)

This guy, the only one left standing in a room of approximately 2,600 athletes, has done FORTY TWO, I repeat, FORTY-TWO Ironman Triathlons in his life.  I bet you think that's impressive huh?  It's not.  You know what's impressive about this guy?  He has done EIGHT Ironman Triathons THIS YEAR ALONE!!!!  And IMWI will be Number 9!

Ironman is truly Inspirational.

Of course I'm preaching to the choir here but seriously, the videos they showed after the pasta dinner we're freggin' INSPIRATIONAL.

How inspirational you ask?

Well, my wife Joanna totally is NOT into triathlons. She thinks they're boring to watch and stupid to do. "Why would anyone want to get sweaty and tired?" she constantly asks me. (she's DEAD serious when she asks this).

Guess what?

After the dinner and the videos we were walking back to the hotel and she looks at me and says "I'm glad you're doing the Ironman".

HOLD ON A SEC. WHAT DID SHE SAY?!?!

I couldn't believe my ears.  For the past 9 months we've had our monthly "discussion/arguement" about how she hates me doing the Ironman and that she never wants me to do one again.  blah blah blah . . . we all know the drill.

Anyway, when she said that to me I just had to ask...."Why?"

She just repeated it a couple times (I still couldn't believe what I was hearing....SERIOUSLY).  Then she finally said that it was the videos that were so inspirational.

She continued to completely floor me as our conversation continued.

She then went on to say that she'd do the Ironman too if it wasn't for the swim. (I told her that is a very common statement by the way)  Then we got into a discussion about her training for a century ride sometime next year perhaps and that we would ride it together.  She was so excited and said it would be fun to ride a century together.

Now folks, I couldn't believe this conversation.   The only thing more surprising than this conversation my wife and I had about 3 hours ago would be if I won the Lottery.  I am NOT joking.

DAMN.  I Love Ironman!!!!!!!!!!

Bearded guy...late 40's...from Naples Florida...Joe Bonness...will end up kicking your ass in the race too. Like he kicks everyone elses. He'll probably do 10 hours and change. He was at Lake Placid. He'll come out of the water, probably in under an hour, so you won't get to see him on the bike, but you ought to because his aero position is freaky. His nose is practically hanging over the front tire!

I wish I had his money. Be nice to travel to 9 Ironman events per year, hotels, entry fees, travel expenses, and STILL be able to pay for all the other stuff in life! LOL

i am not sure who joe is, but the guy here is Luis Alvarez. he's a ceo of a mexican company and races as an age grouper for team timex. a friend of mine works for timex and we got to hang out at the tent and talk with luis and harju. they are incredibly nice and had lots of good advice. luis is going to do 10 this year alone. he is the only person that has done every ironman location that exists. he has done 2 a week apart, but assured us that he only 'participated' in the second one and didn't 'race' it. participating for him by the way is ~13:00. sick.

i asked him how he trains between them and he said that he does nothing for a week after the ironman. then he only swims for the second week, bikes/swims for the third week, and waits until the fourth week before running again. so if he does 2 within a month, he can't 'race' the second one and won't even run before it.

That's awesome Steve!

IM is truly one of the most inspiring events I've ever seen.

You're going to do great tomorrow.  I'll see you on the run course!  ( and all of the other BT'ers too, I'm brining a cheat sheet with all the numbers! ).

I'll be at aid station #4 on the run.

OK...thought it might have been Joe Bonness...he was at Lake Placid and I know he's done over 40 IM's. It's still a remarkable achievement whoever does them!

Good luck guys....and Heidi too!!!! Will be watching for you tomorrow!!

Hey, just wanted to say a quick GOOD LUCK to everyone at IMWI.

Not sure what time it is there in the US, but I'm guessing you're probably up by now, eating breakfast and feeling as nervous as hell!!

It's time to put ALL that training to good use.  I'll check in on you in the morning (Japan time) and hopefully get to watch some of you cross that finish line and become...an IRONMAN!!

It has nothin' to do w/ the videos. Women will complain about the time spent training, etc...but when race day comes, and they see what an Iron stud ya are, THEY WANT YA REAL BAD!

Happens all the time.
