Overall Rank = 95/316
Age Group = 40-45
Age Group Rank = 18/45
Event warmup:

Got up at 3:45, ate a PBJ (its the one time I get to eat these with impunity), popped a few Enduralytes, and washed it all down with some Gatorade. I had packed the truck the night before so it was off to the races. I left at 4:00am and arrived at the race site around 5:45. Got the transition area set up, body marked, and ran into Haley (TriComet) and James Reeves (JamesReeves). I then headed to the lake for the swim start.

Swim
  • 29m 14s
  • 1500 yards
  • 01m 57s / 100 yards
Comments:

Great, but long! I had the 3rd fastest swim in my AG. I was not passed by anyone and I passed a ton of folks. I really dug hard on this swim and I know I can put in a much faster 1500 time if it was accurately measured. This swim was probably long by 150-200 yards. I guess everyone had to deal with the same issue.

I'm very pleased with the placing. This was one of my goals, to give myself a chance by smoking the swim.
Transition 1
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

Fastest T1 thus far for me. Total transitions were down to 2:47. I can still trim that if I could work up to running sockless.
Bike
  • 1h 16m 39s
  • 26.3 miles
  • 20.59 mile/hr
Comments:

The course is a very difficult ride. Lots of rolling hills with some long steep climbs mixed in for fun. This was not my best bike segment. I wish I had been on fresh legs, I could have torn it up. It just frustrates me that I can't properly prepare and taper for these races due to this Ironman training. Next year, it will be a very different story (that's what I said last year). On the positive side, I shaved about 4 minutes off of last year's time.
Transition 2
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

I got this spur of the moment idea to ride into T2 with my feet on top of the shoes for the first time, having never tried it before. It was pretty cool. I nearly fell trying to get the first foot out. Not very cool.
Run
  • 53m 38s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 39s  min/mile
Comments:

Hilly and hard. Not a flat spot on the course. Nonetheless, I could have run this faster. Very frustrating. However, I did shave 7 minutes off last year's time.

Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, ate a few of those awesome frozen recovery popsicles.

Event comments:

Positives: Well, I trimmed 13 minutes off of my time from last year, down from 2:55, which is good. I trimmed 1 min on the swim, 4 on the bike, 7 on the run, and 1 min off of transition times. I did well in the swim. My nutrition was spot on. I finished the race well hydrated. The limiter was fatigue, not a lack of energy. I think the PBJ is the magic pill.

Negatives: I dropped like an anchor in the placings on the bike and run. I fell well short of my expectations. This is the exact kind of course where I want to be competitive. There is no reason why I can't be in the top 5 for the swim and bike in any race. The run is where I struggle, so its something I need to work on. Next year, I'm coming back as an Olympic specialist. I'll run a few Half IM's just to keep in top shape, but I want to thrash these Olympic distances next summer. This race and the Macon Rock-n-Roll Half IM will be my two revenge races next year.

I'm kind of bummed that this is my last short distance race for the season. These races (Sprints and Oly's) are a lot of fun. The Olympic Distance races are my favorite. Not too short, not too long, but as Baby Bear says, "They're just right". Now, its on to IMFL on November 5.

Way to go Karl. Wish I had seen you after the race also. Hopefully the pictures will be posted tomorrow or Wed. I got a great one of you coming out of the swim.

It was probably mismarked, and I hope you do better next year in Macon and at this race too. I'm not even attempting Macon next year (or so I say).

Great job! It was great to see you. I feel the same way about this being my last short tri of the season. Hope you have a great couple of months ahead and meet all your IM goals in November. You may see me there in the cheering section.

you did a fabulous job. amazing job shaving time off from last year. i totally understand your feelings about not placing better. its easier to see it when someone else goes through it, i guess. i went through the same thing at the brewhouse this year. i had finished 10/31 at the race prior and thought for sure, if i pushed, i could do top 10 or better at brewhouse. i ended up bop for my age group. it was very disappointing. BUT, my overall time and pace was either the same or better at the brewhouse than at other races. the field was just VERY strong there. at triamerica i placed 2nd in my age group and my times were worse than any other race i'd had this year (other than the swim). it was still fun winning (1st athena, and 2nd ag), but i still knew my times weren't what they could have been. anyway, my point is, the field can vary so much. you times are still YOUR times, whether you place or not. you did an awesome job and should be proud.

"Portions of this race brought to you by Ironman Florida"

Sounds like a heavy sacrifice right now.  It'll be so worth it come IMFL time!  Its a shame there's no reliable method to measure swim course distances accurately...great showing the AG.  You must have hammered the shit out of the swim to come out 3/45.  Heh...that's smoking.  LOL!

Bike and run were better than last year.  You can't bitch too much !!!!

You're going to be scary next year if your focus is going to be Oly's.  Scary!

Great race Karl!  Congrats!

Swim was definitely long, Karl.  I felt like I should have been finished about halfway through that stretch coming into the sun -- of course, that might have just been because I couldn't see where in the world I was going.  I was just happy to beat the little 12-year-old relay team girl out of the water.

Your bike time is impressive!  Especially on a course of that difficulty.

Good luck with IMFL.  I'm sure you'll rock it!

Great job shaving the time off from last year ... and with no taper. Don't yourself up, you succeeded in finishing the race better than most while dealing with some elevation (something you thankfully will probably not see a lot of at the IMFL).

To put into perspective, your "training event" is my "A" race this year; Hickory Knob @ McCormick, SC. (Also doing the Hiawassee International distance this weekend.)

Good luck at the IM FL and hope to see you at an Atlanta area race next year!
