Wow, seems like a risky time of year for a long tri in northern Michigan.  They have a camp set up for the Sept 12-14 and that could be cool too.  I really like cool weather for long distance tris, but not sure I want to bundle up for a half or full.  Tawas has been pretty cool for that start and that's the weekend of Sept 10/11, the one year I had issues grabbing my water bottle since my arms were so cold, though I didn't wear anything extra to prevent it.  This could be a hilly beast too, I'd really like to see the proposed bike and run courses.

I remember several years ago when I was driving truck part time on my off days taking a route up that way I was driving through snow on Oct 1st (the only reason I recall the date is that I used to bow hunt and it was opening day and I was working) on Hwy 31.  Even though it was melting when it hit the ground it lasted for awhile.  Probably a rarity but still shows what kinda of weather you could get.

Wonder if they've been to Michigan in the fall to see what the weather can do?

Beautiful area, but seems like a stretch to call it Traverse City...I suppose HITS Kalkaska doesn't have the same ring, eh?

I'm doing the MSU tri (heated outdoor 50m pool!) that weekend - otherwise I'd at least do the sprint.  Any excuse to go drink beer and eat at Short's is a good one!

Your good to go Mumps, it's not til 2012 so go on up and freeze your tail off.

I lost some interest after looking at the cost of there races.  A new org charging WTC prices seems a little strange to me and with the chance of miserable weather leaves me wondering what there thinking.

Sprints $90
Oly       $150
Half      $250
Full       $600

Went back to there website and saw the full is 2.4/100 mi bike???/ 26.2  Odd Undecided

Also a 16hr cutoff and one year age groups. A lot of things are not adding up but they do have Dave Scott as a spokesman so they're probably getting the advice they need.

I can't imagine dropping that kind of money for a race then doing all the training only to have it snow or be a high of 45* on race day and just be miserable. I am out as well! On to find a NICE 70.3 for next year!

The company/organization looks legit although the date is ridiculous.  There is a reason there is not an outdoor swim triathlon after Mid-September in Michigan..not to mention northern Michigan.  Everybody takes their boat out of the water after labor day because the weather is so unpredictable and can be really cold.  That seems like a very risky date to me.  Personally, I am ready to be done with my tri season by September as racing/training all summer takes a toll.

I do like the little training camp idea though...that has me more interested than the actual race.

It's tempting, but only because no one would be crazy enough to pay those prices to freeze their backside off, so I'd have a fighting chance for AG hardware Laughing  Looks like that would be a great venue, but nothing about it makes sense.  Back when Autumn Colors was the 3rd weekend in September, it was 38 degrees when I pulled in to the state park (and I couldn't wait to get in the water to warm up).  Three weeks later in Northern MI is insane.  Additionally, why couldn't they find 6 more miles of road on the HIM bike course and 12 on the full to make them true iron distances?

@Blake, if you haven't done MSU before, you are going to love it.  I am going to be down in Lexington, KY, doing the 200 mile Bourbon Chase Relay that weekend, or I'd be there for sure.

Y'all are a bunch of sissies!  Just consider it norseman USA.    Its just a little less hilly and offers shorter distances.

I was looking at all the races they are doing and they all have wierd distances to them. None of the "half" and "full" are that. They all are short. Even the Olympic distances are short on some of the races. I don't understand the logic...

Yes, it appears they have changed to standard distances.

I admit I am intrigued. Not sending my money yet, but the seed has been planted.....

In early October at least we can be pretty confident that the swim will be wetsuit legal........

Also, to let people know; the folks that put on the Traverse City Tri are planning a 70.3 next year. The dates have not been set yet but I am pretty sure that TC natives will not be planning a long course triathlon for October. They do a great job with the race they already have and I can't wait for them to put on a long course race.

I can't put my finger on it yet, but something just won't let me say no to this race yet. Nothing makes sense about it. I have been to TC in early October and seen SNOW!!! But how could a new company make such a boneheaded misjudgement and pick a race here then?

Part of me thinks the date will get switched with a warmer climate race and move it up a few months or possibly get canceled all together due to low interest. But then I see they have Dave Scott helping out with some things and think if they have some good people in their company, surely they must know something about that weekend that I don't. What gives Undecided

I was excited when I first heard about this then started thinking about the weather.  Generally, this time of year, morning temps are in the thirties to forties.  Frost on the ground, maybe some snowflakes overnight.... I don't really want to swim in water that's about 60 degrees then bike  with temps in the forties.  Sure, the view will be great but I can't imagine enjoying it when I'm hypothermic.

Great area, but I'm not sold on it yet, even as a local.

Do you think the water will still be in the 60's? My guess was low 50's at tops Undecided

East Bay is already in the 50's.  It was in the high 50's three weeks ago.  I'm guessing it'll be low fifties this week.  This is in a very shallow area that will literally warm up notably from a day of calm water and high sun.

I have no idea what that means for Lake Bellaire.  I have a friend on the lake.  I could ask him to take some readings for us.

Initially, I thought it would be doable for me.  I'm much prefer a cool/cold day than a super hot one.  However, look at the forecast for this weekend.  Its going to be awesome!  77 and sunny on Saturday with a low of 57 from Friday night.  I've never done more than a mile in a legitimately cold lake, so I can't say how I'd feel after 2.4, but my gut says as long it was close to 60, I'd be fine.

What is the water like at Coeur d'Alene?  Is that typically the coldest water in an Ironman?

This year it was recorded as 54.8. I  wore a full wetsuit, booties and a neoprene cap and was cold but comfortable. I got out and couldn't really feel my feet for the first 20 miles of the bike. But that was a nice day that got into the mid to upper 70's. Chances of TC having a weekend as nice as this upcoming weekend two years in a row are extremely unlikely.

I did St George in 2010 and the water was in the upper 50s. I just wore a fullsuit and the swimcap.  I didn't have any felling in my hands after the first half of the swim. The airtemp was warm enough so I thawed fairly quick.   I'm doing Coeur d'Alene this year so I think I'll buy a neoprene cap.

Agreed on TC not likely to have temps in the 70s two years in a row for this weekend.  I would hate to have to dress in a snowsuit just to get warm after a really cold swim.

I was planning to do some comparisons between the average temps, as well as the record highs and lows of different events, just to see how it shaped up.  However, when I went to the hits site to figure out exactly where the race course would take you, I can't find any info on the course.  Didn't they have something about it before?  I thought it was all based around Bellaire and Shanty Creek.  Am I off on that?  Does anyone see the info?  Moving in a couple miles from the big lake could have a notable effect on temps.  Averages are 64-65 for the high and 40-41 for the low.  Records ... lets not talk about those!

I have yet to see anything on the courses just that Shanty Creek would be the host hotel and a "challenging" bike and run course.
