Subject: RE: Asthma like symptoms after swimming in pool Yep, in high school. One of the main reasons I quite HS swimming (I was in the midwest, and it was a winter sport ). Unfortunately pool chemicals can be a trigger for asthma if the ventilation's not good. Some pools set me off, others don't. Our training pool didn't, but it was always a crap shot at away meets. One of my worst experiences involved an attack in the middle of a 200 butterfly race (a near-death experience WITHOUT asthma )--had to be pulled from the pool. I don't get attacks very often, and they are usually coughing or just feeling really short of breath rather than classic wheezing, so my coach (who was an MD ) thought they were panic attacks, bad pacing, or swallowing water. Actually was never diagnosed with asthma until my late 20's but in retrospect I had it since early childhood. You can try asthma meds before swimming, or change pools if that's doable. |
