Sunny
Total Time = 8h 47m 58s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = M50-54
Age Group Rank = 3/3
Pre-race routine:

bagel and PB, banana, water
Swim
  • 1h 44m 33s
  • 4225 yards
  • 02m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

Buoys were mostly blown or drifted off course, so it was almost impossible to sight using anything other than the points.
Very deep mud at the exit before the ramp.
I was okay with the time, since I fully expected to be close to the 2-hr mark.
Transition 1
  • 07m 55s
Comments:

I took my time going through this since it was my first experience in a transition space... gave some thought to how i would pack my bag differently, etc. good practice walkthrough
What would you do differently?:

Florida will be more focused, packed better
Bike
  • 6h 55m 31s
  • 112 miles
  • 16.17 mile/hr
Comments:

the first lap went well until the turn on to Waterloo, which is the long out-and-back through the potholes, cracks, and broken road surfaces. it feels like you get beat up and vibrates through the bicycle for that whole portion and wears you out. Another section of the return leg is rough still from last year. 2nd lap wind picked up quite a bit right before i got to the rough Waterloo portion.
What would you do differently?:

Probably push harder on the front lap, knowing the heat and wind will pick up later... getting out of the water sooner would help!
Post race
Warm down:

Chocolate milk after running from transition to the finish. short run to get a sense of running after the bike. ice water for feet after finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I faded on the wind and heat.

Event comments:

Food selection post-race leaves a lot to be desired. Volunteers were great, as good as I have encountered anywhere. You can tell the AquaBike has dropped in stature here - less decent bag, very limited shirt sizes, and no age group awards for the AB anymore. But if you go into it solely as a good pre-Ironman ramp-up event, and don't mind rough roads on the bike course, it is a good option.
