Subject: Cold Symptoms after pool swim
Does anyone else experience this? After I swim in a pool I feel like I am coming down with a cold. Stuffy nose, runny nose, head congestion, etc. It lasts for about 2 or 3 days. Then gone away, but time for me to swim again and it happens again. I shower right after I get out of pool to get chlorine off my body. Any ideas why this is happening? Frustrating and takes fun out of swimming.

Very similar to what I experience - it turns out that I have a sensitivity to chlorine - I have solved it by wearing a nose clip while swimming.

Yup. I just take more allergy stuff (Allegra, etc) and ignore it.

nose plugs.  Made swimming enjoyable for me again.  No medicine worked, no saline solution, nothing.  I got tired of blowing my nose.  You get use to the nose plugs.  Note, I don't use them during OWS and have no issues with not using them.  Doesn't mess me up

I have this problem too. The health club I go to has a salt pool. I have never experienced this issue before swimming at their facility.

Same problem, maybe it actually is the chlorine... I always thought it was water trapped in my ears. I use swim ear as soon as im done in the pool and hydrogen peroxide when I get home and that seems to help me so i guess it may not be the chlorine for me.

I don't have the runny nose but boy, I can't breathe at nite after a long swim. BreatheRight strips nip it in the bud! At night, not during the day

Neti pot after swimming.

I switched clubs to a saline pool because of this issue.  The Neti pot works, but I didn't always have it with me and when I forgot, the snot was out of control.

I use to get sinus symptoms until I started wearing ear plugs while swimming.  I use ear drops to dry up any water that does get into the ear canal.

For me it is asthma like symptoms-tightness in the chest-wheezing and a cough. My brief little research suggests it is not so much the chlorine but poor ventilation in the pool area. This is from memory: the chlorine reacts with organic matter in the pool-hair, sweat, skin, urine etc and creates a gas (hydrogen?) which accumulates above the pool, if not properly ventilated it makes people sick.

This weekend I noted that the doors to the pool area were propped open and the air inside was noticeably less 'pool like' also my symptoms were less severe. I had taken benadryl and pseudofed in advance hoping to prevent very bad problems like I had last week. I also noticed the pool, and adjacent hot tub, were much cooler than the normal toasty 80+ degrees.

I realize this is empirical at best but perhaps a word to the pool manager about ventilation would help?

Lots of sneezing/runny nose here. Drives me nuts, but it's gone in a few hours, not days for me.
