Overall Rank = 239/350
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 1/
Pre-race routine:

Stayed locally- awake around 5:30-packed up the car & tried to eat cinn toast & yogurt-& sip on vit h2O after coffee. Get to site & LONG registration line.....no time to do much more than set up & check gears/brakes/tires - and get freaked out by the increasing waves!
Event warmup:

At Kathy's urging- get into that OCEAN water and get wet, move around a little
Swim
  • 19m 11s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 11s / 100 yards
Comments:

First time using wetsuit, first ocean swim- Way too much waiting til wave 5 - all that anticipation ! Dizzy (cold water) on exit, some trouble finding ziper tab....
overall- this wasn't half as bad as I had envisioned- waves, current, salt water swallowing- all new - but doable-having Kathy in my wave was super , and seeing Rob emerge intace helped!
What would you do differently?:

Be a competent swimmer, Have experience in the ocean and with a wetsuit....Have webbed feet and gills ??
Transition 1
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

Long way to t1- peeled suit halfway enroute- but I think I was just so THANKFUL to be out of the water I wasn't really focused on next step- or being speedy !- Surprised by a friend as coming into chute - Great surprise but stopped me in my tracks!Getting the suit off took some time- really not sure how long-kind of a blur but I don't remember any huge difficulty other than chuckling at my "balance" issues with the dizziness.
What would you do differently?:

Practice this transition more to get faster at getting out of suit-
Bike
  • 44m 14s
  • 13.5 miles
  • 18.31 mile/hr
Comments:

I can do better than this. Lost my water bottle early- gave it more than a thought which was a waste of time. Found myself losing focus a few times looking at the scenery...duh....not a cruise, jo- this is a race!

racked at far end since was no assigned # racks
What would you do differently?:

Quicker transition, faster into clips, Don't lose waterbottle, - RACE!
Transition 2
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

I should be able to get this down more- stopped to drink because of lost bottle on bike,
What would you do differently?:

experiement & practice w/ bike shoes on & off for both transitions to take less time
Run
  • 34m 1s
  • 4 miles
  • 08m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

Again- I can go faster than this- but felt ok- concerned about hydration/cramping because ususlly drink all on the bike- but short enough that it didn't seem to matter, tweaked my ankle a bit at one spot-

(That BT hug on the way by probably cost us both a few seconds lol!)
What would you do differently?:

have a functioning watch to better gauge effort/time- also I didn't see mile markers which I find helpful - especially towards the end to try & pick it up a little-
Post race
Warm down:

really none- met by BT Pack THANKS ALL !!!! - and friend at finish chute- didn't really stretch-= had a drink talked & then went to cheer Kathy in -

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hmm.....A pace car next to me saying GET THE LEAD OUT GIRL THIS IS A RACE!

Event comments:

One reason I wanted to do this race was to get over the "firsts" of an ocean swim, and using a wetsuit- BEFORE next season.Late season - lots going on so only signed up a few days before- thanks really to Rob & Kathy's plan to do the race. Didn't have lofty goals because of the need to overcome the swim stuff- but was a bit disappointed in times- BUT- Beautiful day, nice course, and end of season race with great support from BTers Had really NO idea where I was time or place wise at end so was a kick to be 1st in AG - rendezvous w/ BT crew- Life is good!

I wish I could have made it to this one. It sounds like you had an awesome time. Great job for a first ocean swim and CONGRATS on placing 1st in your age group. Way to go!! You run 4 miles in the time it takes me to do 3. Good luck in your training this winter. Maybe we will meet up in some races next year!

Congratulations!! Patty

LOL...I have to laugh at the 18.3 mph on the bike as a touring pace! Thats a pretty quick tour! Great race and it was fun seeing you again. And you still don't look 50!

You are so funny and modest!!

You kicked a$$ and did great all the way around. You have the skills and the mental toughness to do great in the sport....obvious since you placed 1st in a tough sprint.

It was so fun to be able to start the race with you....great way to keep my mind off the waves and how far we really had to swim in the ocean.

So are you going to get your own wetsuit for next year? Now is the time to get one on sale...clearly it didn't hurt you ...maybe even helped??

Thanks for waiting around for me and encouraging me through the final bit to the finish line!!

You are awesome....it was super fun to race with you! Look out tri world next year you'll be even faster!

I demand an age check! Anyone who can have a below average day and win there AG is doing something special. Great work even if it was "just for fun"

Awesome Job! You were really kicking it. 8:30s on the run! Great swim. 18+ mph on the bike. You're a force to be reckoned with. And you were holding back. Next year you are going to eat up the circuit! Wish I could have been there.

Joe
