Pre-race routine:

Wait for babysitter (my friend Christine) to show up. Drive to AB. Park and take bus to B'fort. Drink sports drink the entire time. Pee a thousand times. Caught a ride in the back of a pick up with Vicky, Paula and Mark--I only know VIcky, and not very well. It was fun.
Event warmup:

Wandered around talking to everyone--besides Lisa, Matthew, Zoe, I saw Rachel, Sharon, Jenn, Tracy and Sara. It was very cool to know so many folks there.

Comments:

I felt really good and strong for this--which may mean I could have pushed harder. It's funny, this is the first time I've ever raced 5 miles, and I finished and felt great, and I can already feel myself thinking, 'and next year I want to run 8 minute miles...' This stuff is addictive, people aren't kidding.
What would you do differently?:

I wouldn't stop for the water. I think I was hydrated enough, but I was staying with Lisa for the first half. After she dropped back, I ran with Vicky and Paula and we talked the entire time--it was fun and social but I probably should have run faster.

I would also push myself more. I've been sickly all week, so I wasn't sure how it would feel, but it felt fine and I could have gone a bit faster. Tracy was saying that weights really help with running. I need to find out what kinds.
Post race
Warm down:

walked around looking for my friend and Max. Talked with everyone, cheered for people. Ate a banana, drank gatorade and a half a beer. It was a fine symbolic gesture but it didn't taste that great.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I was yakking. Also I wasn't sure how it would feel to run that far (it's far for me). I wanted to make sure I didn't die, and I think I saved too much.

Massage? I wish...

Event comments:

It's a pretty run, and they did well at blocking off traffic. I liked it, and I'm pretty proud of myself for running that far and feeling that good. Also that I knew and liked that many people there. I've come a long way in the year and a half I've lived here.

Performance:
Initially I thought I did it in 49:26, which would have been cool, but I was reading the times on the wrong side of my number. Oh well.
Course: Start in Beaufort right by the drawbridge and then run over the high rise bridge by the port, then through Morehead City and over the Morehead/Atlantic Beach high rise bridge. We had a nice tailwind.

Good job! for a first time at that distance you don't want to go out too fast. Plus you've had a pretty crazy week. You should be very proud of this race.

Wow, you did great! 10min/miles for 5 miles. Super job!!

We can help each other all winter try to get better. We are at about the same pace and mentality!! Lets keep an eye on each other. We both have to pick up the base miles, eh? Great thread that you entered on that. Maybe we'll send each other some goals. I owe Mel (splerph) and Cris (chris_tree) some goals too!!

way to go!!!
