Pre-race routine:

Got there with just a few minutes to spare. I had to drop off my son at one of his football coach's house before heading to race. I drank a few sips of gatorade a few times starting about an hour or so prior to race. Picked up my race number, pinned it, decided which hat to wear, whether to wear the vest, got my mp3 player situated on my head (note to self: please please please get a better pair of headphones than these cheapy things from the airplane).
Event warmup:

teeny tiny bit of stretching at the start line.
Run
  • 30m 12s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

The first two miles went well. I knew I had a better pace than any other race. The half mile was a toughy. It was some uphill and had alittle bit of trouble getting the full breaths.

I can't believe I did a 9:45 pace! I must have asked about 10 people if they thought the course was short of 5K. One volunteer said that since its a sanctioned event it has to be 5K. I can't believe I finally broke 10min/miles!!!
What would you do differently?:

Push alittle harder. I am always so afraid of the treacherous stitch in the side, that it prevents me from pushing it. Also that last hill was difficult breathing, so, not sure what more I could have done but just ease up as i did there. I should have sprinted to finish once i turned into school though! I could have maybe shaved off that 12 seconds!
Post race
Warm down:

Alittle stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

mental

Event comments:

PLENTY to eat after the race. I would have liked there to be some fruit, maybe oranges and bananas, but they had quite an eloborate catered spread. There was even hazelnut mousse! Salad greens with tangerines and chicken, hotdogs, meatballs, croissants, 4 different cookies, mousse, turnovers, mozzeralla and tomatoes, and i think there was more. Wow, I wish i can go back NOW and eat it.

Good race. Local, nice people, safely executed.

Sounds great--good for you!!!!

Know the feeling about thinking you could push it harder, maybe. I did that today. But I'm still happy and you should be, too!!

Congrats on breaking that 10 minutes barrier!!! That's awesome!

That food sounds really good right now, but i'm not so sure I would have wanted to eat it right after finishing a race.
