Subject: 68 Degrees???
Is that cold to swim in? I am thinking of doing my first International race and my second ever Tri and the water temperature is going to be around 68 degrees or so. Is this bearable? I don't have a wetsuit and I am not going to be buying or renting one anytime soon.

I can take the cold pretty good and thinking this temperature is probably ok. Is it???

thanks

68 is pretty cold.  You may be able to handle cold air, but cold water is unforgiving.  If you have to stage in it for a while you run risk of hypothermia.  Not to mention the risk of it limiting your ability to get a good breath.

Unless you're used to swimming in 68 degree water I would bite the bullit and buy a wetsuit.

Really? Dang it! It's possible it could be up to 74 degrees too. This is where the problem lies. Geesh!!!

Thanks

You can swim in 68 degrees and you should be fine.  I did a race last spring where the water was 58, and there were a few guys who did it without wetsuits.  You'd be better off if you got yourself into a wetsuit, but I wouldn't rule the race out for that reason alone.

Not to mention the added buoyancy of a wetsuit.  Makes you faster in the water...etc etc.  Several added benifits.  Hell...it's only money!

I think 68 degrees is pretty warm. I grew up in MN and we spent summers on an island and it was warm at 68 degrees. Reality is what you are used to is what matters most. I did my first 1/4 IM distance in 57 degree water and I swim slow...was in the water over 40 minutes...brrr...no blood in my legs for awhile.

Now is clearance time for lots of companies so it may be the perfect time to invest in a wetsuit!

How about giving a try to water temps like that now as a ows practice and see how you do w/o a wetsuit? Then you will know how you feel swimming in that water.

68 degrees is cold to me, but then again I think 80 degree pool water is chilly too.  I'm spoiled from living in GA.

Thanks guys, I will test some temperatures out. Maybe fill my tub up at 68 degrees to see how it feels.

Money is an issue for me right now cause I don't have a job. Guess I'd better get one of those soon huh?

68 will feel chilly in the bathtub, but not too cold to for a lake or ocean swim. Most water is cool/cold when you first get in. After you swim around for a while, you will warm up. Wetsuits are definetly better but you will be fine. You wont get hypothermic for a sprint or even an oly while swimming constantly.

GO FOR IT!!!

You should be fine without a wetsuit in 68 degree water - I did my first tri in 68 degree water and didn't even notice it being cold once I started swimming.  Just make sure you get your head wet before you start swimming - 68 degrees is cold enough that you want to be used to it before you dive in and start racing
