Total Time = 1h 02m 51s
Overall Rank = 2758/4527
Age Group = 40-49
Age Group Rank = 636/1037
Pre-race routine:

I picked up my two friends who parked outside of Boston and I drove in. We parked in the Boston Common garage DIRECTLY under the Common where the race is. It was a flat fee for the day of $10, and this turned out to be the cats meow decision! It was pouring rain, so we first went upstairs (out to the common) to pick up our racing chips, goodie bags, have some soup, bread, and nuts (courtesy of Au Bon Pain)and check out all the tents, vendors and hoopla. I got a nutrition review, body fat analysis, and acpuncture WITH a massage (she was extra special nice). Then we went down to garage, changed into our racing stuff. Hemmed and hawed a bit about "should i wear this layer, should i wear rain shell?". Then we did a warm up in the garage, running down and up the isles. We used the garage bathrooms and I bumped into the Doping agency doctor from the day before at the half Marathon that I worked for, LOL. We went upstairs and back out and waited under a tree until they had us line up in waves on Beacon Street.
Event warmup:

They had an organized warm-up, we opted for our own dry garage version.
Run
  • 1h 02m 51s
  • 6.24 miles
  • 10m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

The start was a bit of a drag because people were so congested. Also, alot of women were not considerate about thinking of their own pace. There are waves for a reason. Many women seed themselves in the first few waves and they are walkers, or very slow runners. There is alot of weaving and passing along Charles street. I would say the first mile is a challenge to get a groove going because of this. On topic of etiquette, there was a woman running in front of me, as we closed in the water stop, she SUDDENLY just stopped to get her water. I had to jolt myself to a stop spilling my water right down into my shoes.

The run was great. Water stops every mile and mile markers every mile with a clock. I had a found a good pace and with the mile markers was able to maintain the drive to stay at 10min/miles. My best effort ever. I'm starting to get the feeling of "staying the course" and "pushing myself"
What would you do differently?:

Seed myself more optimistically?
Post race
Warm down:

A few stretches. We went to my car in the garage to change into warm, dry sweats. We went back upstairs to check our posted times, try to find some BT'ers. I found J (isis), (or rather she found me) and got Sunny's message that she was dining gourmet pizza and getting pedicures for her warm down!

Starbucks was across the street...so I entertained a mocha and we left.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The start was a drag as I mentioned, the puddles made for some maneuvering. I was pretty happy with my pace and how I would try to step it up here and there. So, if pressed to think of a limiting factor?...I just need to get a better base in.

Event comments:

This is a great race. Well run with a wonderful course along the Charles river. A great gathering place for all to come together have a good 10K with closed off streets and put together event.

I didn't wear my HRM, but I felt that I was probably keeping a 150-ish rate.

Yeah nikki!!!!!  You did very well!!! Right in the middle of the pack. cool.

I know you really did beat 10 m/m, all the crowds at the start just threw that off by a few seconds per mile.

Good job!

Great job Nikki, for beating your own time!

Your description of the race reminds me of the Corporate Challenge.  So crowded.

Hey Nikki, sounds great! Congrats on your 10 minute miles! Sorry I didn't see you but there were *quite* a few other people getting in the way. :-)

Super Race Nikki!!

You are getting faster and faster...wow....great time!!

You were smart and got a great parking spot that really helped with the bad weather. How was it getting in and out of the garage?

I am going to do it next year...think of me if you need a go girl buddy!!

Awesome.....

Nice report and great race. Knocking 11 minutes off last year is amazing. Congratulations on hitting your goals, especially with the crowds and the rain.

Well done Nikki!  you are so awesome,  beating your times and doing it with crowds to contend with and in the rain!  way to go!

It sucks dodging people doing a run, you just can't get any rhythm going.

Great job! Loved your race report. I was nodding in agreement about race etiquette and waves.
