Swim
Comments: The swim was good and fast although I think it was too warm for wetsuits. However I was not going to give up that competative advantage to everyone else. What would you do differently?: Swim faster!! Transition 1
Comments: After finally getting to use the porta potty, my T1 went rather well. Bike
Comments: Well here are where the problems started. We had to go through the beach park to get to the course and this involved jumping a curb which ejected 2 of my water bottles and my aero drink bottle also. Obviously I had to go back and get them, unfortunately my yellow sponge thing rolled down a storm drain so it was gone forever and I had water sloshing on me the whole bike lap. The aid stations were not stocked as advertised with the first two having water only. I felt really good starting the bike but I noticed my HR was higher than it normally is at that pace and cadence. It was hot but pleasently overcast for most of the ride. Got to the Buckhill/Sugarloaf area and started to feel a bit queesy (sp?) so I layed off the gels and water for a bit to try and get to feeling better. Unfortunately this didn't work and at mile 55 I pulled over on the side of the road and barfed my brains out. This was the end of my day. Some times you just don't have it and today wasn't my day. What would you do differently?: Nothing really, I didn't deviate from my nutrition that I had practiced on my long rides so the only thing I can figure is the infection that I had (looked like strep but strangely wasn't) wasn't entirely gone and it sapped my energy and made me sick. However, I was very pleased at how I did on the bike as I finished the first lap in 2:50 even with stopping to barf! I was disappointed as you might expect but I did stay around to cheer on the other BTers in the Half and the IMCOMET in the full. Transition 2
Run
Post race
Warm down: Went back to the hotel and took shower, got a bit of food and came back to cheer on the other athletes. What limited your ability to perform faster: The fact that I was sick.... Event comments: I am going to give Sommer Sports the benefit of the doubt on volunteers as they have a hurricane going on there now and I can understand people not wanting to come out and help, that being said there is no excuse for not having enough drink stations or supplies to support the athletes. Also I didn't get to use the porta potty prior to the race even though I arrived an hour and a half before the race. The body marking and chip pick up was so disorganized that it took forever to get through, as well as the fact that the transition area was flooded with HIM athletes even though their race didn't start until after 8am. The race people need to either have a Half line and a Full line for body marking etc or tell the half people not to show up until later. They were in the way and had no reason to be there that early. Also, SR 19 has to be taken out of the race course before someone gets killed. Its bad enough that the roads aren't closed but this road is way to dangerous, I had an 18 wheeler scream past me at 50+ mph. You can't expect to have a race on the shoulder of the highway. Obviously I am disapponted as I have never DNF'd a race in my life, I would not recommend this race for first timers and not really to anyone. Last updated: 2005-10-24 12:00 AM

Got up at 3am and ate a bagel with peanut butter and went back to bed until 5:30am. My alarm didn't go off at 5:30 but luckily I had a wake up call as a back up. Unfortuntely this was a precurser of things to come for the day. Drove to the race site parked and walked down to the transition area. I will cover more of this in the post race but the transition area was a disorganized mess!!
Didn't get to warm up unless you count my mad sprint to the water as I was waiting in line to use the porta potty.
