Subject: Is it safe to run in the morning?

Ok, so I never run in the dark at night unless with other people. This works out for me, because I never run at night -- I'm a morning runner. Sadly, the mornings aren't light anymore, and I find myself doing my entire morning run in complete darkness. I generally think that this is safer than running in the dark at night, as I feel that most people who would want to kill me or harm me just aren't morning people.

It's recently been brought to my attention that I'm a dumbass, and have a high probability of ending up in the Potomac sooner than later. Thoughts? I really love to run in the morning, but I just can't get it done in the light if I want to be at work on time. Is it time to surrender to the treadmill or [shudder] mid day workouts?

Having lived in DC for five years (Eastern Market area, SE no less), I felt safer running in the morning even when it's dark. Most streets and paths are well lit in the mall area. I usually took the dog out with me who probably jumped on more people sleeping on benches than I coun - he was a friendly critter.

Here in Columbus, there are less options so I put on my reflective vest for some short morning runs, but usually opt to run at noon during the fall/winter when it's light out.

Once, my sister was out on a run (slow jog) in her suburban neighborhood and a car full of teenagers pulled up beside of her and one guy reached out and pinched her bottom then they drove off. After she got over the indignity of it all, she said that it made her realize how quickly something could happen. (someone could have pulled her into a car)

I live in a small town kind of like Mayberry, and if I run alone in the dark, I still end up running laps in my residential neighborhood because I think it's "safer". (a house to run to, if needed) Then, last week, my 11-year-old son insisted on riding his bike with me because he said, "What if you tripped and got hurt, then no one would see you...." He had a point....

So---I have to say err on the side of safety. Either get a running partner or run in the daylight....

I think if you wear the reflective clothing and carry a self-defense spray I think you would be fine. You might also want to let someone know your route, when you leave and when you return.

I run in the morning, but then again I'm way in the burbs of Howard County and I rarely even see cars going in my neighborhood at 6:00 am.

Of course I'm a guy, so it is a bit different.

Run in the dark in D.C.?? Not my idea of fun by any stretch of the imagination!

It's kind of funny that I never think twice about running in the AM in the dark...put on reflective vest and go, but for some reason I always want to get my PM runs in before the dark comes. If I can't get it in before dark, I usually opt for the treadmill. Never really thought about it before...interesting...what is the difference? I guess the morning is not quite as busy on the roads and you don't have to worry as much about the drunk drivers and crazy kids out messing around. I don't know.

I agree that mornings are safer insofar as I assume that most "bad guys" are not morning people. That said, Dallas had a serial rapist in the '90s who broke into homes after the husbands left for a morning run and raped the wives. So, maybe smarter, better planning criminals venture out in the AM?

Get a dog. You could run through hell at midnight with a Rottweiler.

There is a reason when something bad (rapes, murders, kidnappings, ect) happens the typical responses are

"It never happens around here" and "I never would of thought it would happen to me"

Most people think along these lines and are not prepared to deal with something happening to them. Also most attackers are looking for victims not a fight. So if you do a few things you can decrease the chance of being attack. Mainly care a baton or some sort of "stick" when you run, and run with your head up, don't look at the ground. YOu look more confident when you are looking foward, looking down tend to make people look timid.

Also carring mace will help but some studies have shown that people might spray themselves when they try to get it out in a hurry. So if you carry mace just make sure you are comfortable using it and point it in the right direction, harder than it sounds when someone is after you.

At least the time change is this weekend, so it should be getting lighter earlier in the morning.  This will be good for morning runs!

I'd would run in the morning but it just hurts my knees to much, unless I'm up for at least an hour warming up. My knees are pretty sensative

I run alone at night.  I make sure I wear light-colored or reflective clothing.  I don't listen to music, but instead concentrate on my form and the surroundings (I'm mainly concerned with cyclists or skateboarders coming up behind me).  And we always tell each other what route we're taking -- we have preset routes we run called "the block" , "the square" or "the loop".

My routes are in highly popluated areas, and for the most part they're well-lit.

When I used to live in the countryside, I only ran along the stretch of road near houses if I was going out in the dark.

I remember reading way back when that yelling "help" didn't get as big of a response as yelling "fire".  Probably because people are afraid to get pulled into something dangerous, but a fire endangers everyone in the vacinity.  I don't know whether it's true, but I think I have trained myself to yell "fire" when I need "help."

You know my vote went for the "insane to be up so early"

I certainly wouldn't go as far as dumbass, all depends on the neighborhood, the conditions, how aware you are of your surroundings, etc, etc. I don't do the dark due to the potential hissy fits of male friends as I had mentioned before, and also because I am not the most coordinated person in the world and I'd likely trip over something I didn't see and hurt myself. I'm doing good to avoid that with full daylight.

I'd also not even thought about daylight savings changing over - that will make a difference at least for a little while (and I'll be able to go out in the morning too, which I need so I can continue to hide from the treadmill monster that I know is actually trying to kill me.)

But I think it can be safe, but it of course depends on a whole lot of factors.

Don't let fear guide you too much.  I consider running in the AM darkness a relatively safe activity.  There are too many things we could stop doing out of fear.  If YOU feel safe, then do it.  Trust your intuition on this one and tell your protector to get over it.

I have done both. I like running in the AM. You have less vehicles to deal with. In my neighbor the only people out that eraly are also exercising. I try to run defensely, keeping aware of my surroundings, etc.

I run with my hatchet. The scary people think that I'm even more whacked than they are, and they leave me alone. You might also try mumbling to yourself.

Yeah...compared to running at night, running in the AM is pretty safe (esp. where I live). Anybody looking for something nefarious is probably sleeping it off. Exception would be a stalker type, but those guys'll get you pretty much whenever. And you can't be a hermit.

Heee. Hatchet. Whacked. Heee. God, I am so easy. So, I went running this morning an hour later (Due to a last minute work schedule change) -- it was light! It was awesome! Bring it, daylight savings! Woo! Thanks for reminding me about that y'all -- I had totally forgotten. For the most part, I do think that it's Ok in the mornings -- the bonus of this area are there are a lot of other people out there running or biking, so I'm never completely alone. Of course, this whole thing could have been my way of trying to get y'all to sanction my slacking over the winter. Guess I'd better keep going then, eh?

Mornings Suck

I have had several years of martial arts training. Don't ever underestimate the “enemy”, darkness only is any enhancer. In the right place, anytime is good for a roguish mind.

That said, I like to run at night. I carry pepper spray, cell phone and don't listen to music. I know another person that carries a whistle too.

In addition to everything else that has already been stated, I'd also like to add that there are likely to be fewer drunkards and druggies out early in the morning. I'd imagine that a great deal of the people who would attack someone at night may be under the influence. This also applies to traffic, or course.
