So I've gone to a couple of sites (interviews, race logs, etc.), where individuals describe their bad race days.

"the water was real choppy"
"I was sick prior to racing"
"I just got sick out of nowhere"
ETC.

Have you had an occassion where someone else in the swim leg of the race throws up? I'm afraid this is going to happen sooner or later and I stand a good chance in running...swimming into this since I'm a BOP. I just finished reading an article where Gerard Vroomen claims he barfed 5 times in in the water during a race.

I doubt you can know it's there until you are right in the middle of it "literaly". Any advice?....aside from barfing yourself knowing you are already swimming in it?

While scuba diving, my wife would get an upset stomach and puke through her regulator. It disperses very quickly, it's not like you're going to swim through a big floating muck of solid puke. I doubt you'd even notice it..... maybe if you were drafting off someone who puked, I don't know.

Given the "washing machine" effect, it probably gets diluted with the water pretty quick.

For those that get motion sick, non-drowsy Dramamine works wonders.  I use it before every race and OW swim, even if the water is glassy smooth.  Better to be safe than sorry.

Personally, I'd be a lot more worried about people puking on the run. I've done it twice already, once almost on someone who didn't realize what they were in for when they tried to pass me.

Besides puke on the run.  Gotta watch the runner in front of you suddenly turn to Shoot a Snot Rocket.....If that doesn't break your stride.......

Where's G8RSAX???  She "Wendi'd" several times during the swim at St. A's this year.  There was rumored to be a flock of seagulls following her around.  LOL!

I agree; it disperses quite quickly. I ralphed during my Irondistance swim in May this year. Not too many people behind me, but I don't think anyone actually noticed it out in the sea.

Given the "washing machine" effect

i looked at this effect at my masters swim today... definatly washing machine. if i puked i think people would notice only bc its so clean in the pool.

I've gotta second that one... I got farmer-nose-blowed on at my last marathon by a pretty young lady running in front of me. I almost puked on the guy beside me after that.

I KNEW he'd put this up!! Thanks Jeff!!  Yes, it's true!  I puke at just about every race.  I threw up about 4-5 times during the swim, was fine on the bike, and puked about a million times on the run.  So...if you're in the wave behind me at St. Anthony's WATCH OUT!!

Given the water quality at most of the triathlons around here, swimming through puke is the least of my worries.
