Pre-race routine:

My husband, my cycling sherpa, got to Tucson about 4, checked in and picked up my packet. I wandered through the expo, bought a poster, thought about buying a jersey but they were $70. I should have because I went back later and they sold out.

We had our TnT dinner that night and it was so inspiring. There were over 800 team members from all over the US. Our speaker was a guy from NY who was battling hodgkin's and his wife was battling liver cancer, he was going to do the ride. Listening to those who survive, made my problems seem so, so small and riding 109 miles a piece of cake compared to chemo.
Event warmup:

Our team met at the Marriott and rode over to the race start. It was a sea of humanity, with all the TnT people lined up at the end. It was very cold and of course I needed to go to the bathroom but there wasn't enough time.

Comments:

The first 40 miles just whizzed by. I tried to take in some of the scenery. I was never really alone for long. I was amazed how the race spread out, despite the mass of people. Debbie, my pace mentor stayed with me the entire time, well kinda because I get dropped like a bad habit on the hills. I made some friends along the way: a lady from Philly who carried a small boom box on her handlebars, playing show tunes. There was a couple doing the 30 mile ride on a surrey carrying their chihahua in a basket. The man doing the race in the handcycle. My friend from North Carolina, who got separated from her group and rode with us the last 15 miles, I stopped to help her put her chain back on. My 2 coaches who came back and rode me in. There were times when I want to quit, when I wanted an ice pack for my butt, but I kept trudging. I had no shame, if the lines at the porta potties were too long, the bushes were my friends, until I got some stickers in my chamois. Ouch, but I got them out.

There were so many inspiring riders. I rode with a guy for a while, who had an awful sounding bike, he was all bandaged up; he had crashed early in the ride but refused to stop. I rode with an older man from NY, who was riding for his son, who had leukemia.

My last stop was about mile 80 and I didn't stop again till I crossed the finish. I felt like a rock star, people were screaming and clapping. It was so overwhelming, I cried at the finish.
What would you do differently?:

It was my first century ride. I would not have changed a thing..maybe get new legs to generate more power so I wouldn't have to be out there all day long. I was really worried about my nutrition; I had such distress during the training rides, but I ate cookies, bananas, oranges without any problems. cliff blocs rock!
Post race
Warm down:

I felt bad for the people who took our timing chips, were were filthy. I went to the TnT tent, got some pizza, found my husband, my cycling sherpa. We picked up my medal and I could not wait to get a shower! There was a TnT party that night and I lasted about 20 minutes before I had to go home and go to bed. I had a cup of soup and a coke and was out.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My engine, lol....

Event comments:

This was my first century. We were well prepared through our training, while there was one hill that was really steep and I maxed out on my heart rate, I thought my training was right on.

While I swore I would never, ever do this again, I’m already thinking about next year.

Way to go, Robin! I was thinking about you on Saturday and wondered how you were doing. It was pretty breezy here in the Scottsdale area - maybe it wasn't as bad in Tucson?

Congratulations!

Susan,

There was just a little bit of wind, nothing too challenging.  It was a great ride, very well supported.  I can't believe I'm already thinking about next year, hehehehe

PirateGirl,

I really enjoyed Tucson, more hills though than I thought.  Riding up Esclante was a bit of a challenge, Rancho Vistoso was a grind and those river crossing, my shoes and cleats are toast.  With the Tour right in your backyard, you should join me next year ;-)

Robin

Robin...great storry and congrats!!!  I'm really sorry I missed you...I should have gotten peoples cell phone number pre race, my bad.  Next year I'll remember to do stuff like that.  I'm so happy you did so well.  You look really stong in your "end of race" picture!

P.S.  I cried too when I finished.  But not until my wife came and gave me a big hug with the kids.  I didn't realize what kind of an emotional battle that race was until that moment and I was able to release.

Good Job!!

Congrats Robin, from your report it sounds like you enjoyed your self, I was out riding Sunday with some serious gust of wind in East Mesa which made me think it might be a hard day out there. I glad you wher spared the wind. Hills are bad, hills and wind is just over the top.

congrats again on finishing your Century!

Congratulations Robin!  Reading your race report brought back memories from when I did my first century with TNT in the 1997 El Tour de Tucson.  What a life changing event.  I'm glad you joined TNT.  If you liked the ride in Tucson you'll love the century ride in Lake Tahoe held every June.  About 2/3rds of the 3000 participants are TNT riders.  The ride is called America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride for a reason.  Tahoe is the most beautiful place in the USA.  You should look into it.

It was so amazing to see the different Tnt groups from around the country.  I met people from Long Island, Illinois, Indiana, well all over.  I can't wait till next year.

John,

We rode that route in East Mesa...first time I had to sag it back to the start.  And the wind coming up Usery, well, that's just plain wrong...

I had a great time, you should think about adding El Tour to your list!

Michael,

I am seriously thinking about Tahoe, but maybe the 70 mile route, I hear it's pretty hilly.  I loved my TnT experience and am seriously thinking about being a mentor.

Congratulations on completing the Century with a smile!  What a great picture.

Amazing how you pick-up friends along the route ... I have yet to finish an organized bick ride w/out finding someone to pace through the parts of it.

Glad to hear the warm feedback about TNT - just signed up for my first go around and am nervous about the fundraising part.  My team, however, is great: coaches, mentor and fellow trainees.

Have a happy Thanksgiving!

Fantastic idea.  Be a mentor for the Lake Tahoe TNT team.  Arizona always has a great showing at this ride.  If you can do the 109 at Tucson you'll be fine with the full 100 in Tahoe.  It is very hilly but you can make it with the right amount of training.

You did awesome on a long long ride...I wanted to do a Century then a metric century this year but never did.

Your TnT experience sounds terrific and you made a lot of friends out there on the road.
