Subject: Who's a cook?

Okay, I just realized that I forgot to put the turkey in the fridge to defrost. The turkey is about 14 pounds and all I remember reading was that it needed 2-3 days to thaw. It probably won't go in the oven until late morning Thursday. If I put it in the fridge around 6:30 pm tonight, will that be enough time, even though it said 2-3 days, or am I screwed? Any other suggestions?

Oh, the joy of the holidays.

If you don't have time to thaw it in the frig, you can put it in the sink covered with cold water. Keep changing the water out every time it starts to get warm. Make sure it stays cold. You might want to thaw it as much in the refrigerator as possible before doing the water thing. And that's my two cents

Can't claim it. One of our news editors just did a story on it last week, I think. More on that: http://georgiafaces.caes.uga.edu/storypage.cfm?storyid=2675

Run home and do it NOW!! If not, I suggest doing the cold water thing tonight. Put it in the fridge before you go to bed. Do the water thing in the morning again tomorrow.

Good Luck!

I wish I could...I live 50 minutes away from work (and yes, this sucks). But the cold water advice is great! Thanks folks. Happy Thanksgiving!

Check out butterball.com

They figure 30 minutes per pound for cold-water defrosting. 6 hours per pound for refrigerator defrosting.

Roasting time is 3-3.5 hours for that size bird, so you can defrost Wed. evening and Thur. morning and still eat by early afternoon.

14 pounds? Sounds like a fairly intimate dinner.

If you're nice, she might send you some sweet potatoes and green bean casserole too- but only if you're lucky

There's only 3 of us! It was the smallest I could find.

That sure would be nice. We're doubling up on the green bean casserole. My husband inhales that stuff.

Buy a meat thermometer if you don't already have one. Cook until the thigh reaches 180 degrees or the breast hits 170. The thermometer can save the day if your bird is a little under-thawed when it goes into the oven. Cooking by time/oven temprature is guesswork at best.
