I work for a non-profit, with children. It's one of those great, fulfilling jobs where when you leave at the end of the day you know you've made a difference and you get up in the morning because you know you'll be missed if you don't show up. The trade off? The pay sucks and it's a lot of work. I'm ok with that.
So, I got a raise! I'm pumped about it, because it's been 3 years since the last one and it's a fairly significant one. I have one whole day of happiness!
THEN
I realize that this raise makes me "middle class". Yep. That means my student loan agreement, which was income contingent is no longer eligible for reduced payments. The raise gives me an extra $100 a month. The loan payment WAS $65 a month. The new loan payment is $269 a month. I WILL ACTUALLY HAVE LESS MONEY A MONTH NOW THAT I GOT A RAISE!!!!

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OHH. One more thing. Because the raise is retro-active, I'm responsible for retro pay on the loan, which is $400.
There goes the money I was saving for a new road bike

(being a brat. just ranting for a moment. tomorrow, the smiling children, sledding down the hill will make it much more managable.)

Well, I guess the plus side is you'll now repay the loan a whole helluva lot quicker now.

what is the only reason why i am so cool about taking on the debt!

it pisses me off that as poor as i am, i am considered rich by our system. i can not affored my own place, i saved money (insted of "buying a big truck and raising it and that Sh$t") and since i invested "i have money for school." I dont qualify for private loans BC im so Poor, but to the government in rich. I know guys that dont work more than 10 hours a week. i drop 40 and i am STARVING, BC im so rich. its like once you make decent money that is the expectation, and if you are lazy then thats how we compensate. i dont think i ever saw a "how many hours do you work a week" qestion on any financial aid form. isted its "how much to you make" i work 65+ hours before school, yea i made good mo9ney. so kid worked 15 hours and he made 15k. it pisses me off!

rant over!

Tell me about it.

I've been out of college for four years and have a student loan. It's really not that bad a loan, so i can't complain. But, as an example, my parents worked hard their entire lives to save for my education, and my brother's. We have a neighbor whose household income is about double what my parents' was. But, because my parents had so much more money in the bank their Expected Family Contribution was WAY more than the neighbors'. (We all went to college around the same time, hence the reason for the easy comparison.) It just really sucks, because my parents were penalized for saving, the neighbors were rewarded for spending. Mural of the story: Your kids' education will cost less if you don't save for it. I greatly appreciate that my parents were able to help me out financially with getting an education and I will do the same for my kids, but sometimes I have to wonder if saving so hard and so much is worth it. My parents who earned about 50% of what our neighbors earned had to pay more out of their pocket each year and my brother and I qualified for less in student loans and received less in need-based grants.
