Pre-race routine:

Woke at 3:30 am. Felt good. Ate 1/2 cup of oatmeal, cup of coffee, and 16 oz cytomax. 80-mile drive to the start. Stopped at McDonalds on the way, got a sausage mcmuffin and a small coke, which was the first time I've ever eaten any fast food before a race. Thanks Hal Higdon! I think the extra calories helped.
Event warmup:

Slight stretching, slow jog for a few minutes. With the rain I was afraid of starting the race with wet feet so I didn't do too much.

Comments:

Excellent despite the rain.
What would you do differently?:

Maintain pace and not slow down after 25K. Could have finished in the 4:30 range.

Performance: Good
Averaged approx 27 minutes per 5k for the first 25k. Felt good however based on my lack of experience at the 50k distance, I decided to slow down to 30 minutes per 5k. Wanted to ensure I could finish. Used my trail running experiences and ran off to the side of the pavement until the ground was water-logged then moved back to the pavement. I think this helped reduce the impact significantly. My feet felt better after this race than they usually feel after a 1/2 marathon on the road.
Course: Silver Comet was constructed as part of the, "Rails to Trails" program. Its a paved, flat, and straight bike trail closed to traffic. I thought this would be boring and affect my performance. Race layout was excellent! Race milage markers every 5k, and permanent milage markers every mile. Aid stations approx every 7k. stocked with everything! Food, gatoraid, fruit! Was the best I've ever seen.
