I started incorporating some TI drills into my swimming recently.  During my workout today, I noticed that I am faster when I use a pull buoy and don't kick than I am when I use my legs for propulsion.  Anyone know why that is?  It seems counterintuitive, doesn't it?

You swim faster with a bouy because it helps with body position.  You have less drag with your becuase the buoy pulls your legs up to the surface.  Kinda of the same reason why you swim faster in a wetsuit.  It's all about body position!!

what she said.  Once you get your body position right, you will notice much less of a difference.  That's why I like to do a lap or two with the bouy between sets to check my form.  If I speed up a lot, then my position is doing bad, if it's not that different, then I'm doing good.

I wasn't crazy faster, but the difference was at least 10 seconds faster/100yds.

Jeez, over 500yds, that's almost a minute difference!

Once you get good body position you'll be flying!  I always forget about my body position until I swim with a buoy. It's a good reminder of how it "should feel."  I always try to make sure now that I can feel my heels at or slightly above the surface of the water while swimming/kicking.

Man -- 10 secs/100 is crazy faster to me! I love pull bouys -- I feel more efficient and streamlined in the water (for the reasons mentioned above, most likely).

Like others have mentioned, it is the improvement in body position that results in improved times. The best training day will be the one where you swim faster without the buoy than with it - then you know that your body position is similar when swimming with and without the buoy and that your kick is starting to matter.

Am I the ONLY person on the planet that gets slower with a pull buoy? It slows me way down. Fin drills, I beat the superfast lane, normal, I hang in the middle lane, pull buoy: 5 yr olds are passing me. What gives?

In case it matters, I kick the entire time I swim. It's like a washing machine behind me.

i would say you are relying too heavily on your kick for speed, which isn't a good idea in a tri.  Just imagine how much faster you could be in the run and ride if you saved your legs.

I am really glad this question was asked... I was finding the same thing once I started using the TI techniques!! I think I am both faster and smoother when i am using the Pull Buoys.

Hmmmm, so the question is, if I can wear a wetsuit in the Tri, can I use Pull Buoys in the race too??

Thanks for this post, it makes a lot of sense.

I guess most people are faster with pull buoys acording to our local swim coach.  According to him most people do not have an efficient kick whoch creates drag.  I am slower with a buoy too if it make anyone (Dan)  feel better.  I really like swimming with it tho because I can get a great feel for my body rotation.

Me too. Today it was nice to swim with it to get the feel for the rotation during my stroke.

Trying to put all of this stuff together at the same time makes my head hurt.
