Pre-race routine:

I still don't have much in the way of an actual routine. Got everything set out the night before, up at 6, coffee & parmesean cheese toast for breakfast. Opened the back door for the dog - eep! - it's not warm out there just yet... Out the door to pick up Bryan (aka the leg man) and off to the metro, where we started putting on more clothes on the platform, and I'm wishing the race was starting a little later so it could be a tiny bit warmer.
Event warmup:

Stretching and general bouncing around to loosen things up. I still can't get into running before I run. :) Much last minute debating over long sleeves vs short before turning my bag in - went for short, turned out to be a good idea soon into the race.

Comments:

Ditched the HRM for this run - I just wanted to get out and run and enjoy the day, and frankly, that sucker seems to mess with my breathing. Meandered up to the start (hazard of so many people running), gave B a smooch and sent him on his way (he ended up finishing in 43:28)and managed to settle into a nice comfortable pace straightaway. Best first mile EVER - 10:1010:15, and just smooth the entire way, which is really unusual for me - first miles I usually am a big mess.

Ditched the t-shirt about halfway through mile 2, walked about 15 seconds on a couple occasions (stitch in my side - HATE THAT), but still feeling good and smooth in my pace. They put the water station just before the mile 3 mark - I was starting to wonder if I'd suddenly gotten VERY slow because we're going along and I am sure I've done 2.5 miles and still...no water. I'm starting to look for water fountains outside buildings. Finally get there, walked the water station, discover we're to mile 3 - woohoo! - finish about 3/4 of the water and dumped the rest on my head. That felt really, REALLY good.

Somewhere near mile 4 there was a little girl on the side of the course, and she wanted to high five the runners, so I obliged - too cute, she was just thrilled, and I was totally tickled by it. Mile 4 - feeling good, not even a mile left, on track for roughly 11m miles, life is good. Keep on keeping on - pace is still smooth, breathing is good, the yak factor is 0. There is one last turnoff on the course, get through that, and just two blocks left.

Coming into the end, there are folks on both sides of the course, and they're way too quiet... So, I take a page from the welshy marathon book, and I decide to do something about this. "Hey, let's hear a little NOISE for all these fine folks!!!" (Even after 5 miles, I still have quite a mouth on me.) They complied, and I managed one sweet sprint into the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Not a thing, totally enjoyed the day.
Post race
Warm down:

Lucked out on the water, didn't even have to get in line for it, there was an open case just inside the chute. Found B, lots of stretching and a clif bar (choc & peanut butter, not too bad!), then just lazing about in Freedom Plaza for a while.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The fact that I am not naturally speedy? Actually, I'm perfectly happy with the results.

Event comments:

The predicted crush at bag check never materialized, so no problems there. Overall, well organized, I liked the course, there were PLENTY of course marshalls and the turnarounds were very well marked. (I'll admit I had visions of missing a turnaround and ending up in Anacostia...) I'm conflicted on the location of the water station...they put it in the best place they could on the course, and it was definitely nice to realize we're right at mile 3, but I was really ready for it...

Course: Oh so beautifully FLAT. There was supposedly an incline & downhill along there somewhere, but I couldn't tell you where it was. Downtown DC is fun to run in when the streets are closed! Several turnarounds that faster folks found to be bottlenecks, but I didn't have any problems.

Yes, a nice race, but where my friend is the puking? It's like you're not even trying anymore.

ROFL, I know, I know - I'm becoming such a slacker. I'll try harder next weekend.

Hey Cindy,

Great race and report.  Very consistent pace there in the middle.  That will serve you well next weekend.  Perfect weather for a race today, too.  Congratulations.

Thanks! Yeah, I was really happy when I went back and looked at my splits and saw how spot on they were through the middle. I'm still surprised at the last split, sure, it's not *quite* a full mile, but it calcs out to 10m59s if it had been, and honestly, I certainly didn't feel like I was going any faster, just more like I'd really hit a good groove.

(I find I'm saying "I was really happy" a whole lot today!)

Nice run Cindy!  Sounds like it was a great run for you and an even more enjoyable day out.  Glad you had fun.  Don't know about the yak factor = 0, but I am guessing zero is a good thing!

Now I am off to make parmesean cheese toast.  Damn you!  But that sounds good!

Yak factor of zero is very good - first 5 mile race I did w/ Chippy, I puked at the end (and proceeded to sprint into the finish). Trying hard not to repeat that, or at least make it AFTER the finish line.

My marine Drill Instructor always told me that if I didn't puke after a run, I wasn't trying hard enough!  Stoopid F-ing marines!!!   (sorry Stake, I only kid...don't kill me!

Excellent race report ... good to test out a few things too.  I've used a race number belt for a few years now and love it.  I didn't have one for my very first triathlon, and when I went to put on my top (with the number attached with safety pins), it ended up ripping the race number in two places as I struggled to get the thing over my wet bod.

You are right - the day was gorgeous and the course was nice and flat.  Definitely cool to be cruising through the capital with no traffic to deal with.

Great job on the run!

Nice race....cool pacing ...great to finish strong!

Sounds like not puking is a sign of great improvement. I always struggle with the what to wear issue too..it must be a girl thing. I'm cold now but I'm going to be running and get hot...how do I calculate the hot run thing including the weather changes that might come up.

You are so ready.....go get em....looking forward to your next RR w or w/o puking!

I'd know it ahead of time but my daughter ran this race also.  She had a good race too.  She will be running the Cherry Blossom 10-Miler in a few weeks too.
