Total Time = 6h 26m 34s
Overall Rank = 1342/2032
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 137/194
Pre-race routine:

Work up @ 4AM. 32oz Gatorade, 1 Cliff, and 1 health choice Vegetible Soup. (Get in my Fluids & Sodium) - Didn't want to eat anything too solid.
Event warmup:

none.... Listened to Audioslave; Tool & Perfect Circle on Ipod
Swim
  • 50m 27s
  • 1155 yards
  • 04m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

Certainly a crazy way to start of my season. I got in the water an nearly quit right then and there... But naturally, I stayed confident and simply raced my race. I took a very slow and easy apporoach until I could get settled in, then once on the return trip started to find a rhythm to get the hell out of that cold water!!!!
What would you do differently?:

Just be more prepared. Maybe get out there a week early and do some open water swims to get used to the cold and open water.
Transition 1
  • 04m 16s
Comments:

Came out of water up ramp to about 100 people screaming
"C'mon!! Doing great!!! Go get em!!! Tear it up!!!" Air temp was about
50 degrees, colder than the water. Stripped off my wetsuit, slapped on
some arm warmers and my helmet, swigged some gatorade and ran my bike
through the Bike course shoot.

What would you do differently?:

Stop for a picture
Bike
  • 3h 18m 26s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.93 mile/hr
Comments:

Took a very conservative approach and stay aerobic through the ride. Raced my race...
What would you do differently?:

Just strenght train more in preparation. I could've road harder, but wanted to make sure I had juice to finish. DNF was not an option.

Keep in mind, that I trained on an indoor spin bike since October and was only able to get out on the road for 1 for miler, one week b4 I left for Cali!!!!
Transition 2
  • 03m 10s
Comments:

Dissmounted bike and ran to my bike rack. When I got there, there
were a handfull of athletes lying down, which at first I thought, "did
they finish already"? But later found that they never made it to the
run... Guzzelled down some Gatorade, and squeezed out 2 Gu Gel's, and
ran through the run chutes.
Run
  • 2h 10m 18s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 57s  min/mile
Comments:

I played it conservative and never really pushed myself until the final stretch after then beach. My Goal was to finish...
What would you do differently?:

Maybe run a little hard the whole final stretch. I had a great time though. Posed for some pictures, walked while guzzled some gatorade, used the porta-john when I had to.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and then walked my bike back to motel. Took long hot shower!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Strength, familiarity with Terrain,

Overall: 0/2032
Performance: Bad
Suit: Orca Speedsuit with Hood
Course: * Struggled in the swim big time. Water was freezing, and couldn't get into a stroke until I got out of the harbor and into the open. I fought through, despite being blazed by several incredibly strong swimmers, one who was even a navy seal. (Option 700 meter course was offered, but I declined because I'm the real deal.....) Keep in mind that I live and train in NYC and the only water I have access to is 75 degree pool water with a solo lane to myself 95% of the time I swim?

Course: Beautiful first 30 miles, slight uphill, nothing too tough, a little bit of cross wind, but all along the pacific coast line. Pacific Ocean to my left, mountains to my right. Mile 30, turned right for a trecherous 26mile ride into the mountains. 3 very tough climbs, 1 corkscrew, 1 long curve and then one long striaght. including sections of rollers that just wreeked pain an havoc on my legs and back. On the last 2 miles of the course, it finally got flat, but I was riding straight into the wind, so even that was challenging. As I pulled into the transition area at end of the bike, ton's of people and Marines screaming and cheering.

Course: Started getting hot, opened up with an easy pace of about 10 minute miles. My body hurt... Really hurt, especially my back and my calves. But my H/R was good to go. As I came running through mile 3 I could feel blisters forming on my left foot. Water that I dumped on my body soaked up my socks and started to rub my toes the wrong way. I just pushed on through, despite the pain. At about mile 8, a some surf bumbs were on the course blasting "Eye of the Tiger"!!! I suddenly got a burst of motivation and started shaddow boxing while I was running!!! Since my name was on my bib, they started screaming "C'mon Gonzales, move your ass!!!!" I started running harder. They pointed to some dood in front of me a yelled "lets go Gonzales, take him out!!! You can do it!!!!!!" I ran past the dood, and the were screaming yeah, :GO! Go! Go!" Victory mile 13, as I ran past the 100 or so spectators, I threw my guns up like Hulk Hogan, FLEX!!!! Crowd all screaming!! As I came throught the finishing chute they pulled the long plastic ribbon across the finish line which I ran through with my hands raised in a feeling words just can possibly describe!!!!

Great Report ! And Congrats on the Race Too!

I am looking to do this race in the future (2007?)

I have a much better idea of what rides I need to do to be ready for it.
