I am serious about this, give them a hug, and tell them you appreciate them. I have learned/am learning just how hard it is to put on a triathlon. Even a little tiny one. There is miles of red tape and hundreds of hoops to jump through, a million little details that would never cross your mind.
The people that put on large triathlons should be worshiped! SERIOUSLY, I am in awe of these people, and will always take the time to stop and thank the volunteers, even to the point of writing a letter and thanking the race director personally!
I just wanted to let people know that they should beware of the amount of work that goes into just arranging to have signs hung up (and the permits required to do that!) J
So LOVE YOUR RACE DIRECTORS!!!! (and tell them!!) |

Expert 702 Manchester, NH | Subject: RE: Love your Race Directors Good point! It's easy to pay our fee, and look at it as buying a service, but there are usually tons of people there just in the spirit of volunteerism. And, I suspect most RDs are working very hard for very little financial reward. Edited by immyfish 2006-04-06 4:40 AM |

It's a nice way to give back to the sport. ... couldn't agree more. Everyone should volunteer at least at one race per season. If not you, the athlete that enjoys the sport, then who is there to help the RD? It was this sentiment that got my happy rear out of bed at 6:00 am on Thanksgiving morning to volunteer for the Atlanta Marathon. Plus it is a lot of fun to be that close to the race + was surprised by how nice the swag was (new LL Bean Atlanta Track Club vest). |

Yeah, I dunno how much the RD will appreciate getting hugged by a big, sweaty, hairy, panting, exhausted, Body-glide-smeared man. Actually, maybe some people are into that kind of thing. Anyway, I think I'll figure out some other way to give back to the sport. Like volunteering. |

Expert 760 Mt. Morris, IL | Subject: RE: Love your Race Directors Lets all have a group hug for our RD. Just remember, some of the big wigs make good money doing it for a living (this is just saying that the small races are probabaly harder to do the big established races done by professionals). |

Crystal Lake, IL | Subject: RE: Love your Race Directors Jlee - as a COJ addict I've noticed my attention span has become similar to an Irish Setter's - ooo, a fly! - so I missed/forgot about this. What did you end up deciding to name your tri? When is it? How's the planning going (obviously a lot of work per your OP)?

Veteran 247 Eagle River, Alaska | Subject: RE: Love your Race Directors I didn’t end up really naming it, just called it APU's Spring Triathlon, it is this Sunday. And it has been a lot of work, but tons of fun. The real problem was that I was totally starting from scratch and I have met with a lot of people that thought it was a great idea but were unsure of my ability to pull it off... so they were not very willing to help (by donating prizes... or actually showing up for meetings...) I was very frustrated last night, due to the fact my permits were all set and then the muni decided they needed to dig up the trails we were planning on using. Something they never thought to tell us they were planning on doing when we applied for the permits in the first place. These permits are a pain to come by in any way but the additional work is worse, suddenly I had to find a new bike route, make all new maps, reapply for permits,(which requires locating my schools insurance policy, going to the muni offices, and pages of paper work) as well as being required to rewrite a bunch of other paper work….. And I am done whining….. Most everything has gone really well, its just the ability of one small changed detail that suddenly creates masses more work! Jamie |

Coach 10487 Boston, MA | Subject: RE: Love your Race Directors Jamie, Good luck with your race this weekend! Setting up a race is a lot of work and it involves a lot more things that I ever imagine as a racer, but the reward it is amazing and certainly fun. We need more people willing to put on the work and face the challenge to continue promoting the sport and providing great venues for beginners to take upon this awesome sport. A bit of advice, have your key people know all the possible scenarios prior the race and know exactly what to do about each. You already accomplished a lot but the real challenge is coming up. Be prepare as race day is a crazy crazy crazy day (I didn’t know most triathletes are like me so demanding, impatient, annoying ) I am sure you’ll have a lot of success! |

Champion 8903 | Subject: RE: Love your Race Directors I never get tired of telling Keith Jordan (of Timberman, Mooseman, Big Lake 1/2 marathon fame) what a great job he does. Race directors do the dirty work that the rest of us would never want any part of.

Save the administrative trouble, run over the dug up trails and call it an Extreme trail Triathlon? Guess that wouldn't work. Sorry it's such a hassle but I hope everything comes together on Sunday for you. I'll bet you are looking forward to Monday! |

Regular 1025 | Subject: RE: Love your Race Directors Thanks Max!!! Your check is in the mail Just got back from driving/inspecting a new possible race course for a new possible race....Some others hit it on the head...we do this because we LOVE it. It ain't cause of the money I get really excited about new ideas, hence driving around all day today, measuring out bike courses, etc. I come up with new races all the time in my head, but am really choosy about what we'll do. We'll see... We have a FANTASTIC crew and volunteers. I get most of the credit, but the passion all of these folks show is what makes the events great...make sure you thank all of them!!!! |
