Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:30. Had the usual southwestern omelette w/salsa. Skipped the guacamole. Packed a change of clothes and was on my merry way. Drank about 40oz water at home and in the truck.
Got to Oxford, registered, and evacuated the bladder.
Event warmup:

Ran about a half mile out, then alternated walking with strides back to the truck. Ate a banana, drank some more water, put on my HRM strap and race number. Stretched and then it was time to run.
Run
  • 40m 52s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

PR! My previous best 10K was during last year's Sea Colony Tri (41:22). I thought I had a shot at 41:00 based on some of my recent training runs, but I knew I was really going to have to push myself. When I reached the first mile mark in 6:24.5, I knew I had a good time in me. I leaked a few seconds during miles 2 and 3, which was to be expected. Mile 4 was a surprise, but we were running into a decent breeze for most of it. After the turnaround, we had the wind at our backs, and I felt much better and felt like I had a little more to give. Right from the start there were not too many people ahead of me, and the guy right in front of me slowly gained distance through the first 3 miles. After the mile 4 turnaround, I started making ground on him, and passed him just beyond the 5 mile mark. From there I could hear his footsteps the rest of the way in, and kept wondering if he was going to have one last push to pass me. I gutted out my second fastest mile of the day. Once I could see the clock at about 40:30, I wrung out everything I had to finish sub 41:00. Very happy with this race.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Bent over, gave some consideration to vomiting, walked around, and drank some water. The kids were at Opening Day ceremonies, so I had to get back to Cordova to take Buck to lacrosse. I grabbed some bananas and a muffin for Buck, then took off.

Event comments:

I saw Todd as I was leaving, and I gave him my race number so he could collect my plaque. This will be my second race where I "win" my age group, but was beaten by another 40+ y/o who won the overall race. Took 30 sec off my PR, so I couldn't be happier about that. Nice spread of food. Too bad I couldn't stick around to enjoy it.

Smokin' run!

Congrats on the AG win, and being top 5! That rocks!

Are you running the Bay Bridge 10k? I'll be there. Aiming for the same kind of time you just got.
