Emilio - 2006-04-25 10:59 PM Sorry Matt, with all due respect this comment is wrong. What kills a garment is not the chlorine...it is a combination of the following: 1. The hot shower or the hot jacuzzi after your swim. Hot water burns the spandex fibers leaving the suit material visible after a short time. or 3. Wrapping your suit in a towel and putting it in your gear bag. Bacteria starts to form within 120 minutes on any moist surface that is not exposed to air. The best thing to do after using a tri short or a tri suit in a pool, is to let it breathe, let it get lots of air...air dry.

I train in jammers and race with either tri shorts or a tri suit.  Really like my De Soto gear.

Glad to hear about garment care from the source!  Now I know that I need to rinse my tri shorts out with cold water.  I have a pair of De Soto tri shorts I bought in 2002 that lasted until this year.  Didn't realize the mistake of rinsing in the shower.  Thanks!

Now that I know the lingo...I train in swim shorts (lots of drag) and race in a TriSuit (Desoto).  I'll take my tri shorts to the pool on occasion, but very rarely.  I figure I need all the resistance I can get.  That way I can at least feel fast in the race.

I train in jammers. My technique provides enough natural "drag" that I do not need any additional help!!

I was originally horrified, in part for any onlookers, at the idea of wearing anything smaller than jammers or tri shorts. However, the first time I had to replace a suit last year I was in a bind.

I had suddenly realized the current suit was well past replacement time so I couldn't wait for a trip elsewhere or even order online. The local stores that did carry jammers were charging almost as much for them as they were for tri shorts and the store I usually buy from anyway had shorter, square cut trainer suits for a decent price. So I tried them, and realized the appearance was a non-issue. No one else looked twice and I soon forgot about it.

I'm currently using a tri short for racing, and training in another pair of jammers though I think I prefer the shorter suit now. I've also lost some weight and inches since I started too. And, it's not that big a jump from the short square cut trainer to the speedo so it could happen someday. It just doesn't seem to matter much when you're in the water.

Jammers for training.  Tri shorts for racing.

Maybe an even sillier question, but as a female, do you wear anything under the tri shorts during a race? i've found de soto shorts, but haven't bought them yet, for fear of having to buy bottoms as well to wear under them.

Not a silly question at all, in fact it would be more silly not to ask and then look silly at a race.

Whether you are male or female, Go commando under the tri shorts. Wear nothing underneath. If the shorts are made specifically for women, there should be no seam down the middle, neither on the inside or the outside of the short.

Real men may wear speedos, but I've still got about 10 pounds too much real man on my frame to look good in them.

I'll stick with the jammers for now!

Currently train in a regular swimsuit as my jammers became see thru in the back. Race in a Desoto Trisuit.

Square cut nylon speedo trainer/drag suit.  25$ and last me 2-3 yrs and usually in them 2-3x wk.  Best investment out there.

I train in a square leg. Race in Tri Shorts.

Someone comes from a swim background. I don't think anyone who doesn't race buys a square leg. I train in square leg, and race in an almost full body fast skin (holds the HRM in place). As for the subject topic: I prefer Jammers over speedos.

Of course, I wear the budgy smuggler underneath all my swim suits because of the whiplash effect while turning hard.

TYR Jammers for the pool training.

Emilio, it is going to be GREAT to have you around. I should have ordered your Power Tri shorts last year and I am for sure this year!

Jammers. You'll never catch me in a speedo as it brings back memories of the Fat, Old Men that wore them at the pool when I was growing up (my dad included). That image alone is enough to make me refuse. Plus being a cyclist I'm used to people seeing me in Jammer like shorts.

Well I'm glad I could leave ya'll with such a wonderfull image for the day.

Thanks for your warm welcome. You'll be glad you waited to get Power Tri Shorts as we have this new ribbed Lycra Power material that is best on the market hands down.

I train in board shorts and throw in the jammers every other week or so to remind myself that I am slow but not that slow.  My board shorts are like wearing an ancor so the workouts are significantly more difficult.  I race in tri shorts.

I start my swims with a pair of trunks.  After the first 1000m or so I peel of the trunks and finish up the swim with a plum smuggler.  I have always trained in a Speedo.  And while playing water polo we always wore 2 at the start of the game. Many of us ended the game with just one at the end of the game. The suit I currently use is about 20 years old.  A real nylon suit  ( does not give or stretch and hold everything nice and tight) not the new lycra or poly suits.  I think I will move to jammers when I replace it. I race in a tri short.

Yeah - I will second that vote - the new ribbed lycra power material is pretty cool. It even looks cool (I mean FAST)....
