New user 8 Auburn, AL | Subject: Diet Sodas I have a nasty addiction to Diet Coke. I started drinking them over 15 years ago, and I start every day with a big ole 20oz. I probably drink 1-2 20oz servings over the course of a day, sometimes a little more. My diet otherwise is mostly healthy, but after loosing 35 lbs triing, it has leveled off. That being said, I know it's not an ideal beverage of choice and it's gotta go. There's way too much Aspartame and the other chemicals I can't pronounce in there to be doing me any good. I've also heard that the body simply begins to react to Aspartame in the same way it does sugar over time - not sure if that's true or not. I feel fairly certain if I can kick the habit, I can see some improvements in weight loss. So my question is, has anyone else gone this route and what were your experiences? I'm not much of a warm drink person, so coffee never really has done it for me. Maybe there's a more natural soda I can get my caffeine fix from on my way to an all water/unsweet tea diet? |

Extreme Veteran 393 The Center of My Universe | Subject: RE: Diet Sodas A lot of folks around here drink the Mexican Coke which is full sugar but it's real sugar (not HFC or anything else) and they say its better for you if you are going to drink soda. I like diet Pepsi now and again but have done a pretty good job getting off of it. I decided 30 days prior to IM I would ditch the diet soda and just did it. I like OJ so I've started mixing OJ with water at 50/50 for some flavor in the water and less calories. You might try mixing a real fruit drink with water for something besides just water and tea. I find the same stuff does get old after a while. |

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Diet Sodas This won't give you your caffeine fix, but if you're craving carbonation try plain old carbonated water (kind of dull in itself), but then add a splash of juice - like cranberry juice - and a squeeze of fresh lime. I find this combination satisfies my "soda" craving but has no nasty sweeteners or calories (or caffeine). |

Expert 1028 Detroit, MI. Kinda. | Subject: RE: Diet Sodas Your body only reacts to diet in the same way as sugar in that it can cause some insulin level fluctuations, which in the end can make you crave carbs. It can only effect weight gain/loss if YOU don't control yourself. Count your calories and learn to eat what you need, not what you feel like...that is what will get you results. I'm a diet soda fiend and have dropped 90 lbs without sacrificing diet soda..that said, you're right that it needs to go for overall health and I've reduced from 20-32 oz 3-4x/day to 8 oz 3x/day (and 2/3 of that is caffeine free now). The bonus is that when I need a caffeine pick-me-up for a workout, the pill/energy drink is way more effective with the reduced daily intake. |

Veteran 203 Traveling | Subject: RE: Diet Sodas It all depends what you replace it with. I used to drink 2.5 liters a day of diet coke/pepsi. I cut it out 111 days ago (and counting) cold turkey. Problem is I let me diet go to hell and have gained weight. But despite the weight gain my stomach is less rotund and I feel better. But I do miss it... |

Veteran 179 | Subject: RE: Diet Sodas "I used to drink 2.5 liters a day of diet coke/pepsi" wow that is a lot of Coke/ Pepsi!!! I found when i had to cut back on my caffeine intake, I also cut out my soda. I have it every once in a while. Sometimes my wife and split a regular soda and in turn split the calories. I have found that when I drink soda the carbonation makes me gassy. I have basically decided to avoid the soda at restaurants, way to much carbonation! I think diet Dr. Pepper and the new Dr. P 10 are the best diet drinks. |

Master 2500 Crab Cake City | Subject: RE: Diet Sodas I was also a big Diet Coke fan but I found that I didnt have a problem giving it up. I think I might have one once every 3 months or so. I stick primarily to water or seltzer water (makes me feel like I am drinking a soda because of the carbination). |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Diet Sodas There's not a lot of evidence that diet sodas are bad for you specifically, but there's a fair amount of evidence that large amounts of artificial sweetener consumed over long periods of time isn't that great for you. The most immediate problem, though, seems to be that your body sets in motion the same type of sugar cravings it would if you consumed a lot of sugar. It's even worse, though, since your body also somehow senses it's not getting the real thing, and many people wind up eating MORE sugars from other sources than they normally would, simply by adding artificial sweeteners in the diet. As to the OP--you could brew tea with caffeinated water. You could actually go cold turkey from diet soda that way. I've drunk tons of coffee with sweeteners before, and truthfully the only way I wound up cutting down was getting really sick (from other things, not the drinks) and not being able to consume anything, and then only very plain foods. Caffeine really irritated my stomach. |

Expert 721 | Subject: RE: Diet Sodas I rarely drink diet soda anymore. I do like my cup (or 3) of coffee. For cold drinks I like water, sparkling water (with or without added flavors) or iced green tea. I like to make fruity green tea strong, and put some carbonated water in too! And the occasional glass of wine . |

It's vile stuff that does you no good. Kick the habit. When you say things like that, the terrorists have already won! Seriously though, what triaya said is correct from what I have read too. Diet soda in and of itself will not cause weight gain or prevent wt loss. There are no calories in it! The theory is that it forms part of a larger issue with sugar/treats, etc. and a generally unhealthy diet (since in a lot of people the two go hand in hand). I would bet that in people who lost weight after cutting diet soda, they also changed other habits, perhaps unconsciously, which led to the wt loss. There is no way that cutting something that doesnt add calories can, in isolation, lead to wt loss. To lose a pound you need to have a ~3500 calorie deficit (doesnt matter where it comes from)...thats a lot of 0-calorie sodas :-) |

She promised I would loose 3# the week I went off it. OK. I weaned off of it and went without for about 2 weeks and I didn't loose a pound. Its one of the few things that was making me happy. I like it, it actually curbs my appetite and I am not giving it up. |

Extreme Veteran 409 Washington, Utah | Subject: RE: Diet Sodas I also had a nasty Diet Coke addiction. It was the last bad habit that I was holding on to (quit smoking, started eating clean etc.). I decided it was time to kick artificial sweeteners and HFC. Primarily I drink water. If I'm craving something fizzy I opt for La Croix flavored seltzer (coconut is my favorite). every now and again, if I was a soda I drink the Throwback Pepsi, it's like the Mexican Coke in that it is made with real sugar and only has about 4 ingredients. |

I have been looking around for info on Carbonated water being bad for you and cannot find much so I guess whoever I heard that from was full of it!..... small steps, small victories |

Member 110 | Subject: RE: Diet Sodas HUGE Coke Zero fan here but went cold turkey on 13 Jan and not looking back. So many theories/studies/etc out there regarding the "diet soda" issue. Biochemically I can't imagine the stuff they put in it being any good for the body so I cut it out. First couple weeks was rough but now I'll just grab my water and be happy. I've shed about 20 lbs since cutting it out but I can't attribute it all to restricting sodas--I've also cut out most sweets and processed foods (which has been easier to do I believe because of not drinking Coke Zero). Somebody on BT has a quote that says, "No food tastes as good as skinny feels"...I'm not looking to be skinny per se so I tweaked it a little when I get the urge to eat unhealthy--"No food tastes as good as my body feels running/biking being X lbs lighter" One foot after the other, Running Q |

Pro 4360 Baton Rouge area | Subject: RE: Diet Sodas I still drink Diet Pepsi. Don't tend to overdo and don't drink it after 4pm. In December 2010 I saw some pictures of me in a wetsuit and my first thought was beached whale. Did what someone else above posted was count calories, make sure I eat healthy and lost 21 lbs. Still drink Diet Pepsi and seriously doubt (for me) that droppping DP would help me lose more weight. If I wanted to be lighter I would revamp my caloric intake. If you feel that it isn't right for you then most definitely cut it out. But I personally don't believe simply cutting out sodas, specifically diet sodas, will do much for losing weight. |

Master 1517 Grand Prairie | Subject: RE: Diet Sodas I used to drink about 2liter of diet soda a day. Mostly Diet Dr.Pepper. Overtime I have reduced my diet soda intake. Now we do no longer buy any soda (unless we have guests or have a ultra bad craving). Only when eating out (1 to 2 a week) I treat myself to a diet soda. But there are multiple perspectives here: - The taste for sweetness you acustom yourself to with diet soda - The unhealthyness of all the artifical stuff in diet soda - The tendence of driving more than needed with dies soda - The caffeine overdose, which impacts your sleep and thereby your body regeneration - The cost of diet soda over filtered tab water or ice tea
Personally I enjoy my "treat" diet soda even more since I don't have it all the time anymore |
