Subject: ITouch or Kindle Fire?

We are trying to decide between the two for my son for Christmas.  I don't know anything about Kindles but have read a bit online.  It looks to me like they are almost the same except for size and that the Fire doesn't have a camera.  What else am I missing?

Thanks for any input - I am trying to get my Christmas shopping done this weekend!

You have to decide what he's going to use the device for. I have both an iPhone and a Fire, and the Fire is much better for watching movies and reading ebooks, while the iPhone/Touch would be better for music because of its portability and potentially bigger storage. I rarely use my camera in my iPhone so do not miss it in the Fire. For others that might be a dealbreaker. Another consideration is your source of media, as you are choosing between iTunes and Amazon. Fewer apps, for instance, available for the Fire, although I have yet to search for one that I didn't find.

It's also worth noting (albeit it may not be a concern for you) that while the Fire is a slamming deal for what you get, it is not upgradable and lacks most (any?) input slots. That basically means that as soon as Amazon comes out with their new flagship, the Fire will be forgotten and possibly unsupported.

Still, it's a lot of Bang for Buck at $200.00 in the Tablet world.

Curious why you say this, is there some historical precedent where Amazon has forgotten and not supported previous models of Kindle?

Still haven't decided.  He will use it mostly for games and movies.  Actually that is probably all he will use it for.  There is a Target deal that is swaying me towards the ITouch right now though.  You can gte an 8Gig for $195, there is a 10% off coupon, you get a $25 gift card back and there is another coupon for a $10 gift card if you spend over $50.  So that brings it down to about $140.

For that $60 difference he might have to deal with the smaller screen.    And I won't have to hear my girls complaining that he got a Kindle when they are only getting our old hand me down IPhones to use as Touches.  They are getting surfboards as their big gifts so they won't be getting any new Touch type presents.

I'll throw the Nook Tablet in the mix.  You are not locked into ITunes or Amazon and it has external storage slot.  I could load up a card with a lot of movies and take it on a long trip.

There's quite a precedent of Android failing to support "aged out devices" and legacy models, and in some cases where phones are still being sold on shelves that have never, and will never, receive a push from Android.

An interesting graphic comparing Apple and the Droid family....and demonstrating one of the major faults of the distributed source method:

http://theunderstatement.com/post/11982112928/android-orphans-visualizing-a-sad-history-of-support

I can't say that this will carry over to the tablets family, but I can only imagine it's a logical conclusion to make....

If he has friends with the iTouch they can do video conf with FaceTime and they also can text message. Both of these are no cost over wi-fi - my kids love it!

I have both an iTouch and the Kindle Fire.  Love them both, and am ready to upgrade to the iPhone shortly.    I had the kindle 2 with the keyboard before this, so the Kindle Fire is a definite upgrade.  I read a ton of books, am moving to digital magazines on it, can check email, facebook, surf, do my calendar and to do list, etc.  I can do all of this on my iPod touch too.

That said, for our boys this Christmas, they are each getting an iPod touch.  They're smaller, and I think will be better for them.  I don't picture them reading too many books on it but rather, games, music, podcasts, calendar (eventually), and surfing the web (when we let them - our guys are 7 & 9, so we log them in).  I got a great deal this past weekend at Best Buy - $189 with a $30 giftcard.

THe Kindle Fire is much bulkier/heavier.  I can throw it in my purse, but I regularly put my iTouch in my pocket. And honestly, the Kindle Fire is not as easy to use as the iTouch.  Apple just sort of "gets it" in the useability/intuitive department.  But, I have no complaints about the Kindle Fire, really.

I don't know how old your son is, but you'll want to get a rugged case for whatever you choose.  I ordered otterboxes for the iPod touches.  Cases for the Kindle Fire were not as plentiful since it just came out.  For me, it wasn't as much of an issue because I'm pretty careful and I just needed a case on it, but for my guys, I'd want something more rugged.  I broke the screen on my first kindle and Amazon replaced it for free within the warranty, so I'm pretty careful about the screens.

Don't know if I helped you at all.  But, figured I'd throw in my 2 cents since I have both.

FrequentFlier said it best. It's really an *android* thing more than an amazon thing.

For what it's worth, I just ordered a Kindle Fire for my eleven year old sister.  The iPod Touch might be nicer for games, but we liked that the Kindle Fire is a bit bigger to be used as an ebook reader, and will hopefully encourage her to read more.  Just my 2 cents.

Thanks everybody - I got him the ITouch.  I think he will like to have the camera because he is always using mine to take 500 pictures of the dog.  I also like the portable size since I will probably be the one throwing it in my purse if he ants t take it somewhere.  The good deal at Target didn't hurt, either!

We did go to Barnes & Nobles the other day and the kids played with the Nooks.  They loved them, but they said if they could only have one they would probably pick the ITouch so they could take it places easier, so looks like I made the right choice!

If you might entertain an alternate - you might consider the Toshiba Thrive.

It's got 32g of RMB and a 1ghz Dual processor.  Wi Fi only and upgradable memory, USB port and HDMI connectable.  Runs android and works very well.

And costs more than twice as much as the Fire or the 8gb Touch, right?

Apples to apples, the 8GB Thrive is still 50% (~$100) more than the 8GB Fire or Touch.
