I recently attempted to complete the Canberra 70:3, unfortunately, I had to end the race due to 4 punctures and 2 ruined tyres (Schwalbe Lugano). A few Tri members have recommended Conti Gator Skins - does anyone else have any other recommendations?

Thanks

Graham

Gatorskins, gatorskin hardcase or Specialized Armadillo and you won't even need to swerve to avoid glass. You pay for it in rolling resistance, though.

I train on gatorskins but switch them out for races. They are great training tires but I wouldn't race on them.

A friend of mine - races bikes, not tri - swears by Tuffys inside his tires. I have never tried tried them but am considering it. One flat in a race I can handle but two might be a DNF.

There are two types of bike riders: those who have had a flat, and those who will.

I've found that the Continental GP400s and the Michelin Pro3race tires offer great flat resistance without the rolling resistance penalty of the Gatorskins/Armadillos. Make for a great tire to use for both training and racing

I use Conti 4000s tires. Not sure if those are the same ones Bear was referring to, but I love them. I have had really good luck with both the clincher and tubular versions.

I did New Orleans 70.3 on them. I love them.

MAXXIS RE FUSE. I moved here last year and went from flatting at least once every ride to rarely flatting. Stopped at the LBS and asked what I need to do to avoid punctures from goat heads and he handed me a tire and said, "Here you go."

I would quit cycling if I got a flat on ever ride. I got 2 flats the entire year and they were on the same ride I didn't notice a good size hole in the tire when I changed the tube out after the first flat.

Yeah, no kidding! I flatted three times on the last ride on my old tires, which were kevlar lined. Riding became fun again after I switched.

2x those things are bullet proof. I use them for outside in fall/winter/spring when the roads are full of crap. Won't race with them switch to Conti 4000s.

New tires is always a good idea once flatting becomes more common. Casings get thin and punctures more common as objects can protrude more easily.

But, are you sure the flats are from thinning tires? You might have spokes protruding through your rim strips. Get Velox rim tape instead of the factory plastic or rubber band for inside the rims. Check to be sure the inside of your rims aren't damaged as well.

Also, you may have had a shap object stuck in the tire which you never removed. A piece of glass or a staple can hide within the rubber and poke the tube repeatedly. 4 flats is not coincidence.

Make sure you install tires with the label at the valve stem. That way, when you remove the tube, you know where on the tire the flat was. The tube is mapped to the tire and you can check that spot on the tire for trouble.
