Anyone done this race before?  I'll be travelling down from Washington State.  Still winter here, so I haven't even had my bike off the indoor trainer!

Did the race last year and will be there again this year.  It's a great race to kick off the season.  The bike route is a flat rectangle, nothing at all technical, so as long as you can ride a straight line your trainer rides will have you prepared.  The only elevation change is getting out of and back into the lake area for transition. There was an aid station during the bike, but was more trouble than its worth.  I recommend having your own supply to get you through the ride.  The lake will be dark murky water and we'll be swimming into the sun to the first buoy.  It's recommended that you sight off a pair of palm trees on the shore.  If you make it the the practice swim you'll be able to see what I'm talking about.  The run is flat around the lake with some segments on a packed dirt path.  Last year it started to get pretty warm on the run course for the middle of the packers.  Transition was divided into age groups but rack placement was first come first serve so get there early if you care about getting the best placement.

Thanks for the feedback.  Can't say I'm a big fan of murky water as I'm pretty used to open water swims in clear lakes up here.  Sounds like it will be a good early season measure of my training (or lack of it!).

Good Luck!

Those of you that have driven out from over the hill race morning...what time did you get there to get your packet and get setup? I know I need to leave early, but don't want to spend a ton of time sitting around.

It seems to me, the Desert is a lot like similar tris, pretty empty when transition opens, getting busier until the last minute. One thing that looks different is packet pickup and the expo is at the park Fri rather than at the Embassy Suites, but that probably won't effect much. Racking is mostly by AG.

This will be my first Int'l distance race. I've done two sprints so far (Strawberry Fields and Long Beach last year) and am using this as a guage to train for the Oceanside HIM next year. Gotta say, this triathlon stuff is fun.

Totally agree. I got there early last year...like 5am and was the first person there...lol. BUT...and this is a big BUT, I would not have wanted to arrive late or miss the opportunity to park in the main parking lot...it gets pretty complicated pretty quick having to park outside the event.

Thanks man...I really appreciate that!

I'll be back for Oceanside....or, depending on how the injury heals, I may switch to Leadman 125 Las Vegas instead of Oceanside.

Nice job out there today Dusty...even if you did drop out after the bike.   Your swim has gotten smokin fast and your bike is insane.   I think we've both come a long way from the Hansen Dam spring 2 years ago.  :D

I think you were right in front of me at the swim start.

Did you like how I just walked right in front of everyone like 30 seconds before the start....lol.

It was a great time. That is such a fun race. Too bad I didn't see you afterwards....

haha, I did notice.   :D   There were plenty of scared looking 35-39 year olds looking nervous that you had to wade through.

It is a fantastic race.  I was solo this time, so I went straight to transition and packed up to head home.   Next time I think I'll bring the family and camp out.
