I know there are some who want to do cold OWS. I will be out at Sagurao Lake (58 degrees-Butcher Jones Cove) tomorrow with a friend (by the way she doesn't use a wetsuit...just a bikini) to do a 20 min. swim between 8-8:30am. Also, if my legs are up for a 5 mile trail run I will do the trail after.

i'd love to get in an OWS these next 2-3 weeks before my first Oly race in San Diego...however weekdays are bad for me and have time to go on a saturday and sunday morning.  I was planning on doing an OWS at bartlett this weekend, but may have to be pushed to next weekend of march 10th or 11th.  Anyone else interested on those dates?

I really should get out and swim in a cold lake before Oceanside, less than 5 weeks from now.

How big a person are you...Oh, and I guess are you male or female?? I've got a small Blue Seventy Sprint that I can let someone use and I want to do some cold water swimming soon!! I heard last year at Boise 70.3 the water was 51 degrees.

My goodness Jasen. 51 degrees is real cold. It took me a while to get used to the brain freeze. Gezzz it hurt so bad. I wonder if I put an ice cube between my eyes before getting into the lake would make it better getting into the cold water.

I will likely head out to Bartlett (if there is any water left at Rattlesnake Cove), Saguaro or up to Pleasant the weekend of 3/24 in prep for Oceanside.  No practice swimming in the ocean at Oceanside pre-event, so have to get in the water just to remember what OWS temps feel like (after living it up in comfort in an indoor pool since IM AZ).

I'm open to an OWS at Saguaro on the weekend. Maybe I'll bike up there...?

EDIT: Actually never mind the biking part. My wimpy body wouldn't be able to hold up in the water without a wetsuit!

Let's talk more about this bikini you mentioned.

She swims without a wetsuit! This is Katie's site. She is an awsome gal and actually she coached me for my first OWS at Saguaro a year ago. She braves the cold water in a bikini!

Let's plan for it then Fitzy.  We can figure out which cove to take on as it gets closer.

I likely will not ride up at Pleasant that weekend.  The should not preclude you guys from doing so, but it is a week before IM Oceanside, so my time in the saddle that weekend will be very, very minimal.  Pleasant has some fun riding, though, with challenging uphill grades they use as part of some of the local tri's held there.

Pleasant Harbor is the best and safest (IMO), but getting in there when there is not an event is not easy, as harbor gate security has turned me away before.  I have also gone just north of Desert Tortoise campground (where the road goes into the water) and swam in that area and it was relatively safe from boats (a few wave runners and sail boards were in the area).  Castle Creek ramp and cove would be nice, but too many boats in the area freak me out a bit.

You're all braver than I am to go to pleasant.  I've dealth with too many boats diving there to think about swimming.   For those who haven't been, try Canyon Lake- in the Boulder Rec area.  No motorized water craft allowed, bathrooms/parking a few yards away from where we enter, and a nice straight length of water (.6-.8 mile to the back of the canyon depending on how far you go).

I'll be in for Pleasant on March 24th. Let's do the 4 lane boat ramp area as there is a nice buoy line to swim. Hopefully someone will have a Garmin that they can guestimate the distance.

Are you referring to Castle Creek area Todd?  Even with a buoy line, is that not a pretty popular area for boats?  I like the long straights they have to swim by, but it seemed a bit dangerous.

Unless things have changed at Pleasant, I've always felt pretty safe in the area by the North entrance to the Park (four lane boat ramp).  I usually get in the water at dawn, and have a decent amount of time before the boaters start up.

Thanks Brian!

OK, so based on popular 'vote', it looks like 3/24 at Lake Pleasant, up at the 4 lane boat ramp (Castle Creek) at first light.  What are our numbers looking like?  The more the merrier - feel free to swim whatever distance is comfortable, at whatever pace is comfortable.

Had a great OWS at Saguaro Lake with Katie and Allison. Water temp was 58 degrees and colder when you go out to the first buoy (sp). Allison and I stayed in for 40 min. and Katie without a wetsuit 20 min.

Allison and I did a trail run after. A wonderful day!

Maybe out there next Tuesday. Will keep you posted.
