How much does it cost to rent a wetsuit?  I hate the idea of renting one just for 1 OWS session, and as much as I'd like to buy one, my first Tri isn't until May 13th and from what I've been told I won't need one for that race (not to mention it's only 400m).  What kind of temps should the water be before I can do OWS without a wetsuit?  Thanks!

I think water temp near 65 is okay without a wetsuit. Your mileage may vary.

At Lake Pleasant, in the summer, we can guess the lake temp by looking at the nightly low air temp.

BHannahs - 2012-03-01 8:04 AM Unless things have changed at Pleasant, I've always felt pretty safe in the area by the North entrance to the Park (four lane boat ramp).  I usually get in the water at dawn, and have a decent amount of time before the boaters start up.

Thanks Brian!

OK, so based on popular 'vote', it looks like 3/24 at Lake Pleasant, up at the 4 lane boat ramp (Castle Creek) at first light.  What are our numbers looking like?  The more the merrier - feel free to swim whatever distance is comfortable, at whatever pace is comfortable.

are we still on for next Saturday? first light works out great for me - I've got to get my swim and then head to my daughter's softabll game.

I'm down for next Saturday 3/24 but we have our team picture at 5:45am. I'm guessing that I could make it out there about 7:30am.

All,

I am still planning on heading out to Lake Pleasant on Saturday (5/24) for a morning OWS.  I too will be at the ONE team picture at 0545, but will head up to the lake immediately after.  I figure to be there about 7ish, and will be swimming from the 4 lane boat ramp area (Castle Creek Dr area). My plan is for about 1-2K (20-40min), depending on boat traffic and how I feel, but everyone is free to go as long or as short as you want.  The more the merrier!

The water did take my breath away for about a minute this morning. Not exactly sure what the temp was but clearly the coldest I've ever swam in. I really hope that Oceanside is warmer. Great to get back in the open water though.

You guys did great! Fast swim. Thank you for the Garmin info. Love it! The water was at least 58 degrees.

A group of us will be out tomorrow at Saguaro Lake Butcher Jones Cove (water temp 62 degrees) at 8-8:30am start. If anyone wants to join us. I am staying for the 1 hour swim, 1 hour trail run and than a ride on Beeline Rd. The Marquee Half portion of the course.

Pleasant was 58F last weekend?  Shoot, no wonder it seemed okay.

Did some trail running here up in Estrella today on the FINS. Be careful trail runners because rattlers are out sunning them selfs. One that looked like it just shead it's skin out next to the trail (gray in color). Blended right into the gray rock. Cool sight but I will have my gators starting tomorrow when I hit the trials.

This information is from the Open Water Swimming FB page. Part of the WannTri and TripleSports. Look up FB for more information. Wanted to pass it on. Might be there after my long ride on Saturday.

Saturday. 2:00pm until 3:30pm.
Saguaro Lake, Butcher Jones Cove

Come put theory into practice in a friendly environment! This is prior to the first OWS and Splash n Dash. Learn new techniques or just come wash the winter rust off before the first open water events of the year. Saguaro should be nice quality this early in the season (though maaaybe a bit chilly) so we recommend wetsuits.

This will be a clinic format with discussion, demonstration, and practice of the following:

The parts of your technique that are most important in open water
Sighting
Drafting
Race Strategy

We'll meet on the beach at Butcher Jones Cove at Saguaro Lake at 2:00pm. Remember you need to buy a Tonto Pass for $6 before entering the park. Also, we recommend wearing a triracer if you have one and bringing your running shoes so you can take a little warm-up jog prior and hit the water loose and toasty.

is a triracer just a tri suit or pair of tri shorts?

also, has anyone been to saguaro lately? what's the bee situation? i have a pathological phobia of swarming insects of all kinds...but i'll bee there tomorrow

Anybody doing OWS this weekend/next weekend?  If so, and the water is good enough to not need a wetsuit (even if it is, I should be getting one soon), I'd love to go out and get some experience with it.

One Multisport is running a clinic on Saturday at Bartlett for athletes registered for Rio Salado. And there is a 4 Peaks Racing Splash and Dash in TTL scheduled for Sunday morning.

If I do either of the above, I will probably go sans wetsuit. Still nursing an awful chafe on my neck from Marquee (I guess I pick my head up too much) and the water hasn't been too cold. Though Bartlett will probably be chillier than TTL is now (which is 74).

I'm pretty sure I'm going to do the Splash N Dash.  If you do it, let me know.  It'd be good to actually know someone there so I don't feel like a complete noob haha

Half the field at the Splash & Dash events are complete noobs, so no worries. And I don't mean that in a negative way either; it's just a popular place to get open water swim experience.. especially at TTL.
