On the commute home last night a thunderstorm rolled in and I was about 1 mile from home when it let loose. Big gusty winds and pelting rain beat me up all the way home. What a ride!!! But the thing that almost did me in was the metal storm grate 100 ft from my house. The thought of it being slippery never crossed my mind and I almost went down. I was just trying to get home as fast as possible!!! We don't get much rain around here so I had no idea how slippery things can get and it was the first time I ever rode in the rain.

Anyway, I have a new experience to laugh and joke about and to reflect on "what was I thinking"

I was doing a 100k ride once and about 16 miles into it the rain started pelting down on us. I had a thought about turning around, but decided, what the heck, I'll finish it up, it won't take me too long. The rain was off and on for the rest of the ride. When I got done my husband and all my friends were waiting in the car for me as they had finished earlier then me because they are faster. It was still raining so I tossed my bike on the rack and jumped in the car and we drove home.

It was definitly an experience to remember.

A few other thunderstorm effects you may not have considered: lightning, hail, and funnel clouds. I turned back from a ride last summer when I saw lightning strike a field just off the road ahead of me. The storm cloud was still quite far away, but approaching, and I had hoped to make my planned turnaround point before running for cover. Once I saw the lightning, I headed back. I mostly beat the rain but there was some small hail falling before I got home. One guy I work with, who lives across town, had pictures of ice chunks bigger than golf balls. Later, there were reports on the radio of funnel clouds touching down nearby. Scarey stuff!

On the Solvang Century this year, a bunch of us ran into HAIL in the morning. The stones were small, but they HURT! We also heard some thunder and that made us nervous about lightning. Luckily I was prepared for the cold and the weather and had a balaclava and long everything (see my avatar) so only about 8 square inches of flesh were exposed. I don't know how those people wearing shorts made it through. And it's tough trying to draft off of someone on wet pavement because they're flinging road grime onto your face! Oh the joys of riding outdoors year-round!
