Cutting Edge Events

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 19m 24s
Overall Rank = 46/103
Age Group = 40-45
Age Group Rank = 4/9
Pre-race routine:

Drank protein drink and some water.
Event warmup:

Got acclimated to the cold lake water.
Swim
  • 03m 13s
  • 440 yards
  • 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

Glad I immersed myself prior to the start. Several participants stated the cold water was quite a shock at first. I swam with the beginner wave. Several people were clinging to kayaks. I used my Total Immersion technique better than last week. Felt fine but not fast.
What would you do differently?:

Just need to work on the swim more....intervals.
Transition 1
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

Need to remember to put my bike in a low gear! Started out in high gear and had a little trouble clipping in. Otherwise; few problems.

I set my bike up on the inside and the end of the rack. I really liked this. I put a small stool on the ground and a towel (just to the side of the bike rack). I had plenty of room! Nice.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure bike is in 1st gear.
Bike
  • 45m 28s
  • 13 miles
  • 17.16 mile/hr
Comments:

I got smoked on the bike. Just need to log some miles. My focus has been the run and swim and really needs to change.
What would you do differently?:

More bricks. Loose some weight!
Transition 2
  • 01m 23s
Comments:

Time was faster than this I thought...but who knows. No problems I can remember.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 27m 30s
  • 3.1 kms
  • 08m 52s  min/km
Comments:

Felt fine on the run due to cycling in higher cadence. Ran out of steam the last 1/4 mile. Found a decent pace after 1/2 mile but faded at the end.
What would you do differently?:

Need to do more bricks.
Post race
Warm down:

Did not stop immediately after the finish. Continued by walking fast. I did not dry heave like I usually do. This is a good thing!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weight, need more brick.

Event comments:

The MC was great. She was positive and tried to balance things out while keeping everyone happy during difficult circumstances. The timing was a mess (again). I still don't know how I did within the Clydesdale division. There were no overall trophies for the winners and no Clydesdale or Athena trophies readied for the event (though the categories were advertised). How does this happen?

I'm a forgive and forget type of guy but I waited hours for the awards only to be "forgotten". On the positive side, the organizers did have some great food (deli stuff) on hand. I really enjoyed the park and the food (but what else would you expect from a Clydesdale?) The lake was obstical free, the volunteers were postive and encouraging, and the course was well marked.

Though not thrilled with the administration of the event, it was fun and I will be back!

Sounded like a fun race, and you did OK.  Some races are better than others, I guess we just pick the good stuff from them all and move onto the next one.  Good job!

Nice race, the trophy ceremony did seem a bit disorganized. I was talking to chaveze after the race and he said that the bike was actually 14 miles, my computer said 13.5 any idea what you had?

I had GPS and I was good at just over 13 MPH.  There is a post on the Cutting Edge Site about the Bike Course, if interested.

Snoopy, are you doing any other Central IL races?

Great Job, John!  Awesome -- And to qualify for hardware in AG and Clydes!  Super Job!  Sounds like Race Admin was all messed up though.  We've had similar problems out here with times that have to be worked and reworked to get them correct -- major frustration.

I'm with ya on the dry heaves -- get them after my races as well, particularly when I've pushed really hard  (of course I think you're supposed to push hard in a race, right??     )

Keep up the great work -- You're doing fine!   And remember what someone told me once.....  Good is the ENEMY of GREAT!

GREAT swim time! You smoked the swim!!! First in your AG in the swim too - WOOHOOO!

What lake do you swim in? I've been to Effingham (my ex is from Sullivan). Nice flat conditions out there? Were you surrounded by soybean and fields or was this in the city?
