Pre-race routine:

Had to rouse the kids early, 0600. Lainey's mom had some health complications Friday night, so she stayed at her folks' house. I brought the kids home with me. Loaded everything except the bike Friday night, so was a bit tired Sat. morning. We were out the door by 6:20 on our way to Clayton. Lainey ended up coming down to meet us prior to TA close. Riverwood offered coffee and doughnuts, which was a hit for the family. I passed on those...

Breakfast for me was something new; cup of coffee and a PB/Banana Bonk Breaker bar....my new favorite pre-sprint fuel! 220 calories, but tastes just like a peanut butter and banana sandwich! Bathroom about a zillion times, left my race belt in the trunk and had to go all the way back to the car to get it, my head was out of the game pre-race.
Event warmup:

Not much. As it's at the club and athletic center, there was a ton of equipment just sitting idle. So, I hopped on a stationary bike and did an easy 10 minutes at 90rpm/125bpm while chatting with Lainey and the kids. Then, went outside for a 1-mile run to warmup before the swim. No swim warmup this race, no problem. Took a honey stinger gel at 8:35, headed over to the swim start line.

Love a short swim!
What would you do differently?:

More swim practice.
Transition 1
  • 00m 33s
Comments:

I felt really good on this bike. I was having some slight shifter issues (no chance to get a test ride this morning after swapping wheels, due to family emergency last night). But, I just kept at it. Love being a slow swimmer...pass pass pass pass pass....no idea how many I passed.
What would you do differently?:

Ride harder. Left quite a bit in the tank out there.

Transition 2
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

Struggled just a bit getting the shoes on; had laced them tight as I was going sockless.
What would you do differently?:

Not too sure, but it was a pretty good one. 2nd fastest in my AG, 20th OA

Comments:

Just kept at it. HR a bit high coming off the bike, so took the first mile fairly easy (still was a 6:15)
What would you do differently?:

This was pretty good.
Post race
Warm down:

Marshall ran in with me again. Love that.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim.

Event comments:

A fun event. My first podium in a tri, but even better, my family was there to watch, enjoy the race. Plus, it's a short event. Very nice.

Time trial swim. Was seeded behind a lady who, just prior to the swim, told me she wasn't using goggles, and planned to do the breast stroke. It took me 65yds to catch her and pass before touching the wall for the 75yard turn. After that I had NO ONE in front of me, as swimmer 160 was a no-show. Still, totally slow in the water, 68/103 males, really? Note: this time includes a run all the way down out of the outdoor pool area, into T1, so it made swim time look long and T1 look short. Actual in-water time was 6:14. Run to the mat took 26 seconds.

Congratulations on winning your age group! I really wish I could have pulled myself together earlier in the season and raced with you. This was my 1st tri ever and I still love going back. I drove out that way Saturday and discovered they were repaving part of the course, I hope they hadn't stripped it before the race. It should make for a nice bike next year.
