Whew!  At least it was just a snake.  After reading the thread title, I was scared someone pulled a Caddyshack...

lol, i was thinking the same thing.  I'd take snake all day long over Baby Ruth

yep this is exactly what i was thinking, when i read the title! haha

oh and uhhh...yea...poor snake.

I was, thinking this, also!!! Think I might rather see this than a snake, though!

DanielG - 2012-04-30 12:03 PM Was it doing flip turns? We had a 6"-8" garter snake in our pool one morning. I caught it and chucked it outside "fly, be freeeeeee" and all was well.

Hate to tell you this, but snakes cannot fly. Hopefully you did not do this from a rooftop pool deck...

It was a joke. I underhand tossed the beastie into the leaves.

Ditto on the joke...never for a second thought you actually threw the snake into the air expecting it to fly...not without attaching wings first.

Maybe it was poisonous...

People have primal fears about snakes. I'm guessing there was no one there say "oh, cute poor little snake, he's lost. someone should get in the pool and rescue him"

I'm not saying killing it was right but trying to capture a snake that you don't know isn't poisonous turns a morning swim into a trip to the ER with a life threatening situation.

I personally hate snakes and I'm scared to death of them, poisonous or not.

Have you seen how gigantic those pool skimmer nets are? relocating the poor guy outside would be significantly safer than beating the poor thing to death with a chair on the pool deck.

Why did they kill it? That was uncalled for.

It happened pretty quick.  My first thought was that they were going to release it.  After it got out of the net they got it pinned against the wall.  The "gerry" yelled out "kill it, kill it" and next thing you know, dead snake.

This cute 'lil guy was on the MUP a couple weeks ago. A woman was waving her arms and  yelling me "Be careful, there's a snake!!" as I was running towards her. Like it was a deadly pit viper or something.

6" garter snake, warming himself on the asphalt. I moved him off so he wouldn't get squished.

My wife ran over a copperhead on the SRT once.  Just its tail though.  At first I thought it was a harmless little guy like this garter snake, but once we stopped to look I realized it was NOT a harmless one.  Regardless it wasnt too badly injured and it managed to slither away as we approached.

I too am sad to hear this snake was killed

Oh, it's the Y.  Although, I imagine a snake could hide even longer in the Courthouse 50m pool vs. the YMCA 25y pool.  Just sayin...

I wouldn't want to share a lane with a snake; I hate snakes, as a general rule. But we have rat snakes around our house, and I am very happy to have them. They stay out of my way; I stay out of theirs, and they (along with a couple feral cats and a lovely domesticated feline goddess) keep the little rodents far, far away from me.

All that is to say, I'm sorry they killed the snake. I did not have a happy image of that pelting.

To answer the question asked serveral times, 'why did they kill it', I will submit they killed it becuase they feared it.  Why do people fear snakes?  I supposed because some are piosonous....and so they all get a bad rap.  All sharks are man-eaters but people fear sharks.  People fear mice too.  Why?  Not real sure.  Maybe they think they carry disease?  Maybe they think they will be bitten.  I was on a cruise one time and saw a big mouse walking down the hall!  He was bold too.....about 4' tall and walking around like he own the place!  (Disney cruise)

Back to snakes.  Sometimes I will 'relocate' the occasional snake that gets into our swimming pool.  Sometimes I will kill them if I think they have taken up a home and are not just just a wondering 'tourist'.  Why do I kill the ones I think want to live on our property?  Becuase we have 3 horses and I don't want my wife or children getting hurt buy a horse that is trying to kill a snake.  But snakes tend to mostly stay away from our place.....presumebaly because of the vibrations casued by horse hooves all the time.

If its anything like the courthouse where I work most everyone would just assume it's a defense attorney out for an afternoon swim.

I'm that farmer's wife standing up on the kitchen chair screaming about the mouse running around on the floor. What is to like about them? Icky. Nasty.

Except the four foot kind. I guess he's okay.

I don't think you should kill snakes, venomous or not.

Quick story (as usual):

Fort Benning, Georgia, 1984: Advanced Infantry Training. Night river crossing.

Our platoon is using a rope bridge to cross a river- a rope you hang onto in this case to wade across. Private D.D. is from Compton. He got put in the Army by a judge who said, "2 years jail or 2 years Army, your choice." He picked Army. He was a gang member. Tough guy.

We wade across in pitch black. Water up to my chin, then my mouth... A ball of some kind of squigly stuff hits me in the head. Snakes. A bunch of snakes somehow floating downstream.

Private D.D. freaks. Completely freaks. He screams, lets go of the rope, drops his rifle in the water. We eventually pull him out, then spend the next day and a half camped there while we recover his rifle from the bottom of the river. After that, Private D.D. wasn;t so tough in our eyes anymore. No snakes in Compton apparently. Surprised

So do you think Pvt DD would have taken that snake out of the pool and set it free or would he have killed it? Never underestimate people's fear. :-).

Hey cool.  Nothing like a story that I was involved with to get me back on BT for the first time in looooong time.

I was the guy that went in to get the snake.  I used to be deathly afriad of them.  Then, when I had moved into a subdivsion that was getting developed, I had to pull them out of my garage all the time.  Didn't want to kill them because they'd take care of any unwanted pests that might be out to chew wires, dig holes, etc.  So, I just learned how to tail grab them and toss them over a fence into the woods.

Anyway, I had the net on a pole, dove down to where it was camped out on the bottom, got him to swim into it.  Swam back to the wall, handed it off to the lifeguard who then proceeded to somehow let the snake out.  It fled up under the big ladder they put in when the seniors do their deep water aerobics.  Everyone was flipping out.  I pulled the ladder out a bit to get a look at it.  It was just a Queen Snake, maybe a Rat Snake.  I went over to open the sliding doors planning to just flip it outside, and that's when the water aerobics instructor lady came flying in with a metal folding chair and bludgeoned it.

Sad ending for the snake.  Nice meal for some buzzards I guess.  Oh well.

Small world!  The funniest part of the whole thing was the lifeguard.  He wasn't having anything to do with that snake!  You could see it in his eyes.

He walked up with the net and just stood there.  I looked at him and knew there was no way he was getting in that pool.  He couldn't even hold onto the ten foot pole with the snake in the net.  Dude was way freaked out.
