Subject: you won't believe what was in the pool this morning...

Got in the pool this morning...probably around 5:25am.  Pool had been open for about 10 minutes with most lanes full.  The pool is never this full.  Our local tri season is starting to ramp up, so that may be why it was more crowded.  So I get maybe 200 yards into my workout and something just feels odd.  I catch a glimpse of people just standing around the pool edge.  I stop at the wall and a girl says to me "you might want to get out of the pool".  I do so and then see that everyone is staring at a 4-foot long snake, just swimming in the pool a couple of lanes down from where I was swimming!

After everyone was out of the pool someone got in with a net on a pole and scooped him up.  Once he got it out of the water it somehow got out of the net.  They got it pinned against the wall and then proceeded to kill it.

No idea what kind of snake it was.  Found it very odd that it was in an indoor pool and that people had been swimming for a good 15 minutes before everyone noticed it.

Poor snake. He was lost. He should have been set free, not killed.

Glad he didn't get you though!

There is a 6 foot black rat snake that shares our home with us.  We see him every now and then, in the garden, or in the Spring coiled up in one of several birds nests that get built every year, eating the egss I'm sure. I saw him once go behing the siding (not sure where that leads him).  The first time I ever saw him was in our garage about 4 years ago.  I picked him up and put him outside.  I like knowing he's around and mice aren't.

What were it's times like? Maybe someone was jealous!

Seriously, WTF is wrong with people that they need to kill something for no reason? Just take it outside and let it go.

It was kind of like a lynch mob...one of the "gerries" from the therapy pool said "Kill it!  Kill it with this chair" and before you know it, well, yeah.

They killed a perfectly good rodent killer.  Out of all those people there, nobody stepped up the save the snake?  To me, that's the most surprising thing from this story.  A victory for the rodent community today.

People watch way too much tv. I deal with reptiles in my profession and happen to own 3 non venomous snakes as well. They are not all out to get you, i see no reason why these people feel the need to kill everything they do not understand. Simply bag it and let it go. He was simply looking just to hydrate himself.

Nah, I think they were pissed because the snake didn't take a shower before getting in the pool.

Was it doing flip turns?

We had a 6"-8" garter snake in our pool one morning. I caught it and chucked it outside "fly, be freeeeeee" and all was well.

I can't believe they killed the snake. Once it was in the net couldn't they have put it back outside? Though maybe they were punishing him for not being a nice snake because he wouldn't share his lane.

triple the "why kill it" sentiment.

I have done plenty of swims in lakes and rivers during the summer with snakes if I could tell what type they were (venemous vs non) if I could ID as not dangerous I would just not care. If I could not tell or new they were dangerous I would get out and wait for them to get out.

I am also hoping as the weather gets nicer I will start to see some snakes around my house to play with.

This cute 'lil guy was on the MUP a couple weeks ago. A woman was waving her arms and  yelling me "Be careful, there's a snake!!" as I was running towards her. Like it was a deadly pit viper or something.

6" garter snake, warming himself on the asphalt. I moved him off so he wouldn't get squished.

Hate to tell you this, but snakes cannot fly. Hopefully you did not do this from a rooftop pool deck...

Maybe it was poisonous...

People have primal fears about snakes. I'm guessing there was no one there say "oh, cute poor little snake, he's lost. someone should get in the pool and rescue him"

I'm not saying killing it was right but trying to capture a snake that you don't know isn't poisonous turns a morning swim into a trip to the ER with a life threatening situation.

I personally hate snakes and I'm scared to death of them, poisonous or not.

or pee'd in the pool.

We live in the country and have had to relocate several corn snakes as my wife hates snakes. Have a great pic of one looking in one of our windows.   DW was fine with them until one of them curled up in one of the horse blankets.  She reached in to get the blanket and got a hand full of snake.  The snake didn't mind but she did (to say the least).   Did have one side winder that was agressive, actually came at me for no reason.  I say live and let live but with kids playing in the yard that was one that I couldn't ignore.  The snake lost that one.
