Does anyone have a good recipe for smoothies that are still healthy? I am looking for different things I can eat to help with recovery, fuel, and overall health. Please share!

There are a ton of variations - here's a good chart that will give you some ideas:
http://www.precisionnutrition.com/super-shake-creation

My morning "go to" recipe has settled down to this:
3 cups of unsweetened almond milk
3 cups of mixed berries (I use Kirkland Nature's Three Berries sold frozen by the 4 lb bag at Costco)
3 scoops of vanilla Protein powder
3 tsp of local bee pollen (I swear this helps the allergies)
Fill to the top of the blender with spinach or kale
>>>>Blend!!

This makes enough smoothie to have one each morning for three mornings.

Are you making smoothies that AREN'T healthy? What are you putting in them?

In general, I stick with frozen fruit (acts as my ice cubes), fresh fruit, greek yogurt, protein powder (I use hemp), and a liquid. The liquid is either orange juice or coconut water. You can easily thrown in fresh spinach or kale leaves - they are tasteless and add a ton of nutrients.

1 cup frozen blueberries

1 cup whole oats

1 cup v8 fusion (pomegranate/blackberry)

1 scoop whey protein

Blend.

I have the Magic Bullet (HIGHLY recommend it). Those amounts will fill a single glass.

Here are two of my favorites:

Paleo Green Machine

Pumpkin Smoothie

Now I add kale instead of spinach.  Either is a great way to get another service of veg in your diet.

That is a nice resource, thanks for sharing it.  The chart gave me a few new ideas to change up my smoothies a bit!

Thank you for the link.  Lots of ideas there.

My morning smoothie usually consists of frozen strawberries/frozen banana, unsweetened almond milk, chia seeds, honey, and kale (I'll add a scoop of vanilla whey if I just finished a long or hard workout).  I'm phasing out the whey for plant based protein powders now.

I'm going to try the pumpkin and walnuts next week.  Yum!

My friend gave me a super smoothie recipe.  She said it kept her full and had all the good stuff in it an endurance athlete should eat.  Well, it does, but if I follow her recipe it is over 1100 calories!  No wonder she stays full lol!  I have since edited the chia seeds, and flax oil to help lower the calories, but keep some of the goodness.  Now when I make it (with spinich or kale, ff greek yogurt, fruit, half a serving of protein powder, only 1 tbs chia and a squirt of flax oil instead of 3 tbs each) it's around 600 calories.  Closer to what I eat for breakfast on a big training day.

I got this one from the p90x plan.  It's simple, but tastey.

  • 1 cup skim milk
  • 1/2 cup berries of choice
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1/2 cup ice
  • 1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder

Depends on what you are looking for.  For a while, I was looking for the lower calorie/sugar versions.  BUT, for cost reasons, just settled on EAS that I can get at Sam's Club.  It's like a 5lb bag for 30 bucks.  Maybe less.  It's just cost effective, tastes fantastic, and has decent amount of protein.

It's good enough that even mixed with plain water, it's tastey (even though I prefer it with skim milk).

I used EAS products for a long time, but they have a lot of extra ingredients you just don't need.  The purest form of protein powder is egg white protein.  I like MRM french vanilla and NOW plain.  Some people complain about the taste of the plain, but blended in your favorite smoothie recipe makes it virtually undetectable, especially if you add a little fresh or powdered ginger.

If you want to stick to whey, I'd go with Hammer nutrition products.

Mine doesn't sound good, but after I watched this Ted Talk  I decided to change my diet. Now I have a veggie smoothie every morning with kale, mushrooms, carrots, celery, banana, mixed berries, oatmeal, and peanut butter.

Of course, after the military, I don't really have taste buds...
