I was at LBS today and a worker was trying to sell me some Conti Grand Prix 4s tires. I am looking for at least a new rear tire. Any thoughts .on this tire for training/racing? Also, do you have different tires on front vs rear? He said they are very durable, but pricey..thanks.

Great tires for front and back. Lots of BTers use them for training and racing, including me. Pricy, but good.....and fast.

Buy a pair. Just do it. They are really good tires.

If too expensive at LBS you can often get them from PBK for approx 75-80 bucks a pair, including shipping.

It's a very popular tire on here.

Also keep an eye on http://www.biketiresdirect.comas you may be able to get them at a great price there.

$75 a tire is outrageous... Unless you have a race this week or next, order them from PBK. I have no problem supporting a local shop unless it means paying double for what you are buying.

PBK generally has 15 or 10 percent off codes too.

I loaded up on them last year when they were only 30 bucks each.

That's a discounted price???  I hope he meant to say $75/pair of tires not per tire...

Assuming you mean GP 4000s, $75 is like the list price per tire at Performance Bike, and they always have stuff "discounted" off that.  I think their normal price is about $65 per tire.

Here's a youtube review from Performance Bike:

Note that the "S" makes this the great tire, a GP 4000 is a completely different tire.

I have a couple hundred miles on a set, so far, so good, they do seem to roll better than my Vittoria Rubino Pro Slicks.

Count me in!  And I bought a set of their Gatorskins too.  Four tires for less than $160...

The chipseal around here is devastating my tires on a daily basis.  I'll probably run the Gatorskins regularly and switch to the 4000S a few weeks before a race.....

FYI:  My LBS sells them to me for about $100 a pair.  I know I can get them cheaper, but I like to get them from the LBS.  If they wanted $75 each I'd order them online.  And yes, I have them on my bikes.

I just tried to buy them at a shop near my office. He had them listed for 69.99+tax=74.89.  I asked for a discount and he told me that this was a really good price...  I passed...

I'm all for doing business locally and do, but don't kill me on everything Laughing.

GP4000s get generally good reviews. Long wearing & fast rolling.  Perhaps not the most supple or smooth riding tire in this price class (vs Vittoria Open Corsa, Michelin ProRace, etc), but any tire has trade-offs.  Some (not all) on biking forums have reported GP4k's sidewalls can be susceptible to road hazards.

http://www.roadbikereview.com/cat/wheels/tires-clincher/continental/grand-prix-4000s/prd_411202_2489crx.aspx

FWIW- My fav all-round clincher is Vittoria Rubino Pro Slick, which is  cheaper (street price anyway), (IMHO) more resistant to road hazard, & sl better riding- although  sl slower rolling than GP4s. I generally get around 3-4k miles out of rear tire, then put new one on front & old front on rear.  For events I use Michelin ProRace, which is sl faster/smoother but not as durable or long-lasting as RP's.  These give me ~2-2500mi wear (rear tire).

BTW- According to Continental (and testing by German Tour magazine- which uses Conti's testing gear), GP4000S is not their fastest race clincher.  That would be their Attack/Force combo (F/R different tires), although those tires have much less treadwear/durability for training.

Agree with others that I try to support LBS whenever I can, but USD$75ea seems like list price rather than discount.
