Overall Rank = 17/85
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 5/11
Pre-race routine:

Well, I got there an hour early, but my front tire was flat. I had no spare (will have 2 next time). A great guy helped me out. I had 10 minutes, which I used to stretch and test out the bike. Spent the rest of the time figuring out how the course was laid out, etc.
Event warmup:

Stretched and did a light jog and a bike check.
Swim
  • 17m 14s
  • 805 meters
  • 02m 08s / 100 meters
Comments:

Pretty Crazy layout. Not sure I can fully comment b/c of it being my first tri, however there has to be a better way to avoid confusion.
What would you do differently?:

Find a better spot to start from (I was right in the middle). Need to practice more in open water b/c I kept going crooked.
Transition 1
  • 04m 26s
Comments:

My time here wasn't as bad as it looks. Since this was my first Tri, me and my other first timer decided to wait for each other. At least 2 minutes of this time was waiting for him. Ironically, I would have placed in my age group if I didn't wait....live and learn.
What would you do differently?:

Definitely need a new set up in Transition area. I had my sunglasses in a bag and only one towel. Next time I will make sure and take off goggles, cap and top during run to T1, not wait for anyone, and have two towels.
Bike
  • 36m 47s
  • 12 miles
  • 19.57 mile/hr
Comments:

Was extremely happy with my ride. I may have went a little too hard, b/c my transition to run took awhile. The pace was great, passed a good number of people and felt solid the whole ride.
What would you do differently?:

I need to do a better job of shifting gears, and properly placing food/drink.
Transition 2
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

This result was fantastic for a first time tri guy, with not much biking experience.
What would you do differently?:

Shift down earlier on hills. Pace a little bit better to make the run easier
Run
  • 26m 34s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

The run started very slowly for me as my left foot was numb from biking and my quads were sore, too. After the first mile, however, I started getting into a good pace.
What would you do differently?:

More Bricks. Continue speed work.
Post race
Warm down:

I warmed down very easily. Makes me think I could have went harder on the run.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Transition times were slow. Changing from bike to run needs work.

Event comments:

This was my first race ever, but the race seemed to be run fairly OK. I think they needed more volunteers for sure.

Great race, especially for a first time triathlete!!!  Brick workouts are really helpful for the transition to the run.

Delavan Lake was my first Tri as well. Something was certainly messed up with the organization of the race. If you check the online race results you'll see that they split the Olympic finishers into 2 categories: official and non-official. Over 80 people didn't complete the Olympic bike course correctly, while only 50 people did. I'd blame the racers for not knowing the course if it had only been a few people. But when that many people can't navigate the bike course then something is wrong.

I don't know what was up with that lake but the water was really stinky. And to top off my race I had the medics remove 2 slivers of metal that were imbedded in my heel. Must have happened before the swim start but I didn't feel it until I got my shoes and socks off after the race. Hopefully the Big Foot Tri at Lake Geneva next weekend will be better organized... and better smelling!
