Buffalo, Minnesota
United States
80F / 27C
Precipitation
Total Time = 2h 42m 21s
Overall Rank = 134/229
Age Group = 40-49
Age Group Rank = 21/38
Pre-race routine:

Fuel up, arrived in downtown Buffalo at 6:30 to get a good spot in transition. Note to self: Buffalo has assigned bike racks according to race and age group - no need to arrive so early.
Swim
  • 27m 5s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 39s / 100 yards
Comments:

Need to work on my navigation. Felt like I swam about 2000 yds.
What would you do differently?:

Swim straighter! Overall I didn't feel too bad for my first OW race.
Transition 1
  • 02m 55s
Comments:

Decent T1. No problems getting out of my suit for the first time. It was what seemed like a long commute to the bike. Up the hill and into the chute. Tried to keep HR down.
What would you do differently?:

Move faster!
Bike
  • 1h 19m 45s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.70 mile/hr
Comments:

Stayed within myself as planned on the bike. Average wasn't what I wanted, but didn't want to be smoked for the run. HR started out in the 150's (135 AT) for about 5 mi's then settled into the low 140's. Overall this was a pretty challenging course in some nasty wind conditions.

I knew going in this was my weakest event. I need to RIDE LOTS to pick things up a bit.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster!
Transition 2
  • 01m 50s
Comments:

This transition went pretty well. Stomach was acting up a bit so got some water in me.
What would you do differently?:

Don't dally quite as much.
Run
  • 50m 49s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

Stayed within myself on the run. I netted quite a few passes in my age group and caught many others in waves that started before me. This was a challenging run in the heat. I was much better at conserving energy going uphill than normal and it paid off when I passed folks in the last 5k.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

I was still a bit sore from doing plyos on Wednesday. Arms/chest were a bit tender. Don't do those prior to an event.

Event comments:

Very well run event.

great job. oh, and i ended up setting up transition late since i was off figuring out the 52 year old man thing (see race report), so when i got there my ag rack was full. luckily, i saw some of my fellow county cycle folk and they directed me to the team rack where i found a decent spot. how'd ya like that wind i thought the course would have been easy to moderate if it wasn't for the wind. i have wind burn on my shoulders from riding into the wind in aero.

Wind was tough in the swim, a bit obnoxious on the bike and welcomed in the run.

I got to transition early so got my pick of a spot, but felt like a boy among men. I've got some serious bike/wheel envy.

Oly course was much tougher than the sprint IMO.

Good Job! It was nice to meet you and your wife before the race.

The main reason I agree that the Oly was tougher (despite distance and all the other obvious things) is since the majority of the people did the sprint, things were really winding down before most of the Oly finishers were done. I would think that was a little annoying/tough for those still competing.

You did very well, since this was "Not a Race" in your words!

Great race, Jeff!  Steer clear of those pontoons next time, though.
